Water Works Waterboy Goes Virtual
In past years, the Water Works Waterboy initiative focused on visiting high school sports teams, marching bands, and spirit squads in the Birmingham area to teach them the importance of staying hydrated on and off the field.

However, because of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the utility is reimagining the effort by presenting it through a virtual format. The four-week virtual series includes interviews with fitness and wellness experts from the YMCA of Greater Birmingham. Catch the first episode here, and subscribe to the BWWB YouTube channel for future episodes!

Maintaining Our Infrastructure
Water utilities are a crucial part of the nation’s infrastructure. In many areas of the country, aging pipes are in need of replacement to avoid leaks and breaks that waste treated drinking water.

The Birmingham Water Works’ distribution system totals more than 4,000 miles of pipe. This includes approximately 250 miles of unlined cast iron pipe and nearly 300 miles of galvanized steel pipe, or approximately 14 percent of the system, that are in need of replacement.

That’s why the Birmingham Water Works Board plans for pipe replacement activity every year as part of its Capital Improvement budget. Watch the video above to hear Derrick Murphy, Assistant General Manager, Engineering and Maintenance, discuss our approach to maintaining the utility's infrastructure.
