Dear VCS Families,
What a week this has been! I am so excited and blessed to say that we have finished our first week of school and it has been a great week. Students, parents, and teachers alike have all shared how good it is to be back together as a VCS family.
When I ran cross country in high school my coach would tell us to pace ourselves when running downhill and use the downhills to prepare us for the next uphill. This week the middle and high school students spent Thursday and Friday doing team-building activities. Each day discipleship group (D-group) leaders spent time reflecting on the summer and preparing students for the “race” ahead of them. Leaders discussed the topic of perseverance. To persevere is to continue even when things get tough. At this moment many of us may be feeling like the “race” is feeling a bit easier now that the kids are in school and things are feeling more “normal”. Enjoy the downhill now, but also be preparing for the next obstacle, challenge, or uphill that you and your family will face. This year has taught us to expect the unexpected. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring but we do know the author of tomorrow and we can fully rely on Him as we face the next hill of life.
I am honored to be one of the “coaches” of the VCS team. God has blessed us with amazing teachers, staff, parents, and students. As a team, we will celebrate all of the good things that God has done and will continue to do throughout the year. We will also persevere and press on regardless of what tomorrow may bring.
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12-15
VCS family, may we press on not for an earthly prize but an eternal reward. God is a work in our school, our students’ lives, our community, and our world. This year has been filled with trials of many kinds but I believe that God will use these difficulties to refine and transform us as His followers to accomplish His purposes.
