NEWSFLASH!

Prepare to be puzzled by this latest book (and that's a GOOD thing)

Enigmatic Variations

At last! The puzzle book for musicians is finally here! "Enigmatic Variations - Puzzles for Musicians" is a 48-page soft-cover book with a variety of puzzles and brain teasers that will help while-away those interminable hours which musicians of all kinds must endure.
Waiting for pupils, concerts, rehearsals, travelling to and from events, can now be eased with a little brain-entertainment. It includes sudoku, cryptic crosswords, wordsearch, spot-the-difference, letter ladders, logic problems, a gruelling maze, an organ crawl, and many other little teasers that will ensure this keeps you ticking over for some while to come. It's an ideal gift for any musician; unique, fun, and timeless. (PS, you don't HAVE to be a musician to enjoy this book!)

Bad poetry competition - win a CD!

Now is the chance to shine with your worst scrungled scansion and follow the example of that "patron saint of misbegotten verse", William McGonagall (see From the Swellbox below).  Your mission is to submit a little ditty from between 5 to 10 lines of doggerel on the surprising joys of lockdown. Get pens primed and summon your muse (or should that be 'bemuse"?) The glorious prize for the most inglorious piece of doggerel will be Martin's "Resounding Aftershocks" recorded on the Christchurch Town Hall Rieger. Read more about that wonderful landmark recording here. Enter the competition with your purple prose on our competition page here! The competition will close September 29th, at midnight New Zealand (and cat activity) time.
If you haven't already signed in for your free seat at the Sunday, October 18th Curator's Organ Concert at 3pm in the Christchurch Town Hall, do it now! These days, knowing the numbers attending is important for those organising public events. It is quick, easy, and free to do - go to nzorgan.com for the link to book your seat and read more about Martin Setchell's entertaining programme.

From the Swellbox

  • A subject dear to my quivering heart. Performance anxiety, getting the jitters, stage fright. It's horrid and can blight your life. But there is hope. Read Morwenna Campbell-Smith 's article "Overcoming the misery of performance anxietyhere
  • Think you're bad at poetry? Can't be much worse than the world's most famous appallingly bad penner of doggerel, William McGonagall. Read more
  • Lockdown has inspired many live performances. Here is one by James Welch performing the Bach Trio sonatas 525-530  in St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Palo Alto.
  • Preserving the organ in Sydney Opera House. What a mission... ideal for the organ buffs out there.
  • Michael Barone's superb "Pipedreams" programme is always worthwhile, but one episode (which appealed especially to me, since for the first time in years we were unable to travel to Europe this year) was Postcards from Central Germany
  • Someone had to think of this - bringing kids' drawings into life. Brilliant.

Be cool! Stay safe!

Be kind, and look after family, friends and neighbours alike. Apart from the usual anxieties with Covid-19, the wild fires in America have caused misery and grief for thousands. Our hearts go out in particular to well-known organist Jeannine Jordan and her media magician David who have had to flee their home. I was to have brought you a special item about their encouragement of others in the organ world, but this will have to wait for another newsletter.
Now - go and have a look at my new book!
Cheerful noises,
Jenny
