Budget Action Powered by
Constituent Voices

In our latest Capitol Corner, Michigan Children President and CEO, Matt Gillard, gives us a budget update and urges collective timely action to ensure we're looking out for the best interests of our most vulnerable populations. Nonetheless, we need your help in urging action from our state legislators.

Read Matt's Cap Corner here and keep telling your elected officials about the things most important to you.  Get your friends and colleagues to do the same. Contact their offices by phone, email, or social media. Check out more ideas here.

Youth Advocates Engage with Lawmakers on Housing, Education, Adoption and More

This week concluded the MNYF Virtual Youth Summit, where young people shared their experiences, challenges, and solutions directly with State Representatives Sheryl Kennedy and Ann Bolin. The Representatives not only listened to the youth share their stories and present their specific policy asks but also shared their own personal connections to the issues raised by the young advocates and talked with them about past, present, and future policy initiatives and opportunities.

We are excited to continue to help follow up with Summit efforts and continue to seek opportunities to engage with you, your organization, or local advocacy community in meaningful ways on behalf of our state's most vulnerable youth and families.

Traditional Media as an Advocacy Strategy

Teri Banas on our staff has been working with partners over the last couple of months to successfully place five joint opinion pieces in newspapers around the state, helping to illustrate critical needs and urgency for federal and state action to help. Policymakers and their staff use their local media to keep a pulse on their constituent's concerns, and they pay attention to issues raised.  We want to thank our local partners and co-signers, and look forward to the next round!

Additionally, readers of local publications are able to become more aware of the various issues that Michigan's diverse populations face; often resulting in more local advocates committed to understanding policies and pushing for positive change, by amplifying their personal voice or joining advocates like ourselves and our partners.

You can read any of the published pieces by visiting our Michigan's Children in the News section on our website here. Contact Teri if you are interested in partnering with us with your local media here

There’s no vaccine against budget cuts, but in times of trouble, people-focused nonprofits should speak boldly and focus on building relationships here.
