WORDS OF COMFORT & ENCOURAGEMENT

CONNECTING OUR EPWORTH CHURCH FAMILY THROUGH DAILY DEVOTIONS

Special thanks to Lou Mitchum
for passing this along

The school year in north Florida never began until after Labor Day, but the yearly ritual was always the same. We drove over the Georgia line to Thomasville to the Shoe Box to get our new Buster Brown shoes. Mama made me a new dress for the first day of school and gave me a Toni perm, which created the look of having stuck my finger into an electrical socket!

Then came the joy of shopping for school supplies. I LOVED school supplies! The book bag and lunch box, the colored folders and smell of Crayola crayons.  And, oh, the limitless possibilities that lay upon the unblemished pages of a new spiral notebook and carefully sharpened No 2 pencils. All of this was accompanied by the hopeful determination to be better at math that year, so I wouldn't need the big erasers.

Of all the things we've lost during these uncertain times, I believe it's the rituals I miss so much. Individually, they give us order and a sense of control. We feel grounded when wrapped in familiarity. Collectively, rituals, especially sacred rituals, become holy habits that turn us toward God, hold us together as we wait, and plant our feet on solid ground.

P.S.  I never did do better at math.
