"Yin nourihes Yang"

Women over 40 sometimes experiment hormones imbalance.
They have pre-menopause symptoms and start to get worry.
Chi Nei Tsang therapy helps to balance these symptoms too :-)

Today, lets talk about pre-menopause and menopause :-)

Menstrual cycle

in Western medicine

According to the Western medicine, the menstrual cycle is managed by hormones: oestrogen and progesterone.

2 to 4 years before menopause starts, symptoms appear:
  • hot flashes affecting face, thorax, neck
  • vaginal dryness
  • insomnia
  • irritability
  • weight gain
  • breasts swelling
  • etc.
In the allopathic medicine, when a person in pre-menopause or menopause gains weight, this weight gain is attributed to an excess of oestrogen compared to progesterones.

in Chinese medicine

According to the traditional Chinese medicine, organs and visceral organs work together.
  • heart / small intestine
  • lung / large intestine
  • liver / gallbladder
  • spleen / stomach
  • kidney / bladder
The traditional Chinese medicine is a science of analogy. Nothing is opposite to each other, but is complementary and work together.
The Yin nourishes the Yang.

At the pre-menopause and menopause, the Yin gets weak and unbalances the Yang.

Not a word on hormone

Chinese medicine practitioners don't talk about oestrogen and progesterone hormones at all regarding menstrual cycle disorders.
They refer to organs and visceral ones.

In menopause or pre-menopause, kidneys and its Yin energy are usually involved in those disorders.

Around 40 years old, our Yin energy declines quicker than our Yang energy.

In menopause disorders, we focus on kidney energy which declines quicker, at this specific period of a woman life.

Kidney energy in pre-menopause and menopause

The Kidney Yin energy is in charge of blood and liquids.
The Kidney Yang energy regulates body temperature.

So it means:
  • Yin is linked to the element water while Yang controls the fire one
  • Yin cools the body down, and the other warms it up

In other words:
  • when the Yang tends to rise, the Yin cools it down and vice versa
  • BUT
  • if the Yin is deficient, the fire of the Yang will rise
    • then cause toxic heat that stay in our metabolism
    • that create menopause symptoms such as hot flashes...

It depends on each metabolism

A person can be more or less Yin or rather Yang.
That is why women react differently and have different symptoms.

Yin already weak

If the Kidney Yin is already weak before menopause, the imbalance is stronger and quicker.

A woman in this case will experience:
  • some irritability, hot flashes and decreased vaginal discharge
  • a dryer skin as the Yin is no longer able to moisten the body
  • then the Yang will disturb the heat energy that cause hot flushes and anxiety

Yin of the kidney is also linked to the marrow. This is why the bone structure can suffer too at this period.

Yang already weak

Women with a weak yang energy will experience different symptoms.

A woman in this case will experience:
  • cold in the entire body
  • back and joints pains
  • bloating
  • loss of libido

Menopause and emotions

Pre-menopause and menopause can be difficult periods of a life woman.

The kidney and the will

Some women may feel a lack of energy, a certain weariness or even fall into depression.

In Chinese medicine, kidneys hold the will.
Weak kidneys decrease a person's will power, motivation and creativity.

Liver and irritability

Blood is a substance and substances are Yin.

During pre-menopause and menopause, the Yin decreases and so does the bood too as it will finish by disappear.

Liver is in charge of the blood circulation in the body.
A lower blood volume can damage the liver and block its energy.

Liver is also related to anger.
When the liver is under pressure, it creates anger and irritability as a response.

Symptom regulation

Diet

"Food is our first medicine" Hippocrate.

The traditional Chinese medicine recommends to avoid foods that affect Yin energy, such as coffee or alcohol.

It doesn't mean you have to eat some food that feeds the Yang energy.
NO!
If you eat too much Yang food, you will increase your level of irritability, insomnia and night sweating.

Exercice

Qigong, yoga and meditation help your body and mind to calm down. And those activities help to strengthen bones density.

I hope workshops can be run very soon again :-)
