The District of Sooke is launching its Official Community Plan (OCP) review this fall and Transition Sooke will be there to ensure that the Climate Emergency receives the attention it deserves in the OCP
A group of Transition Sooke volunteers — the OCP and Climate Action Team — has been meeting for the past few weeks to prepare our response to the OCP.

TS provides feedback on Master Plans
Transition Sooke volunteers recently provided feedback on the Transportation Master Plan and the Parks and Trails Master Plan, which were produced for Sooke by an outside consultant. To see our comments, please visit our website.

From rainwater workshop to action
Last November, Sooke councillor Tony St-Pierre attended Transition Sooke's rainwater harvesting workshop. Inspired by the workshop and the knowledge that Canada has established standards for rainwater catchment systems, Tony worked with Highlands councillor Gord Baird to bring forward a motion to CRD's Regional Water System Commission.
The motion asks the CRD to update its existing bylaw for rainwater catchment and bring it inline with the new Canadian standard. The new bylaw, which applies to the unincorporated areas of CRD, will reduce design costs for rainwater catchment systems. At present, design costs are a major barrier. St-Pierre hopes that CRD will lead the way for Districts like Sooke to change their regulations, resulting in a much higher adoption of this excellent approach to water conservation

Backyard Garden Success!
Volunteers from three community organizations (Sooke Region Food CHI, Transition Sooke, and the Sooke Garden Club) partnered with the Food ECO District (FED) of Greater Victoria to create the Sooke Region Backyard Garden Project. The project has supported individuals, families and laid off workers during the pandemic by providing fresh produce through home-based, start-up gardens.
Donations from local businesses, individual residents, the Rotary Club of Sooke, Transition Sooke, Sooke Soil & Landscapes Ltd., assured that the project was a resounding success.
The Sooke Backyard Garden Project has now been completed for 2020. The number of households benefiting from the program was 39, exceeding the original goal of 20.

COVID Picnic
Transition Sooke members gathered in John Phillips Memorial Park recently to talk about how the pandemic is affecting them and focus on the positive lessons they have learned.
