A News Source for Friends of Duke Urology  • September 2020

Message from the Chief
Welcome to our Duke Urology's Fall Newsletter. The Spring always brings the chance to say goodbye to our graduating Chief Residents who were highlighted in our previous Newsletter. However, in our 2020 Fall Newsletter, we have the pleasure of welcoming our new Duke Urology Residents and Fellows, as well as our newest faculty member, Elliot Dubowitch, who recently joined us from Maimonides Medical Center. Elliot will be working in our Duke Urology of Raleigh practice under the leadership of Aaron Lentz.

The Fall of 2020 also brings with it the significant changes that COVID-19 has mandated for all in person events. The Duke Urology CME Committee under the leadership of Michael Ferrandino, John Wiener, and Judd Moul, along with Robin Phillips, have been working hard to convert our upcoming CME programs into virtual events. Herein, we highlight out upcoming 2020 John Dees Lecturer, Chris Winters, who will be visiting virtually with our residents and faculty and sharing his knowledge in the fields of incontinence and voiding dysfunction.  Early next year, Michael Coburn from Baylor College of Medicine, will be highlighted in a virtual joint visiting professorship with the Department of Surgery and Division of Urology to discuss the management of urologic trauma.  Finally, we ask you to stay tuned for further information on our Duke Urologic Assembly meeting, currently scheduled to take place at the Grand Floridian Resort in early April, 2021. We are in the process of formulating this program and have the opportunity to convert this into a virtual CME event, if necessary.

With our current emphasis on virtual education, we encourage you to sign up for these various events and participate from the comfort of your home or office. We would certainly welcome your attendance and have the opportunity take advantage of these valuable CME opportunities.

All the best for a safe and productive fall. Please reach out if we can provide you with any assistance.

Glenn

Welcome New Faculty Member - Elliot Dubowitch, MD

We welcome our newest faculty member, Dr. Elliot  Dubowitch, to the Division of Urology. Elliot comes to us from New York City where he just completed his urology residency at Maimonides Medical Center. Prior to his time in New York he competed his undergraduate studies where he received a major in Life Sciences and also received a minor in Business at Penn State University. Elliot has joined Aaron Lentz and our Duke Urology of Raleigh team. He has an interest in general urology and is already seeing patients.

Dr. Dubowitch is joined by his fiance, Vanessa Fabrizio, MD, who is completing a fellowship in pediatric bone marrow transplantation here at Duke.

Duke Urology Faculty Collaborates with Recent Graduates to Perform Complex Oncologic Surgery at Fort Bragg
Duke's proud tradition of military service has an unprecedented occurrence of two recent graduates stationed nearby at Fort Bragg, NC. Captains Joe Fantony MD (2018) and Stevie Sexton MD (2020) are working together at Womack Army Medical Center. Proving that you can never fully escape your role as trainee, the US Army allowed Tom Longo MD to scrub with them on oncology cases there recently.

Dr. Longo said, " This has been a huge honor and pleasure for me to volunteer with them. It is a great testament to Drs. Fantony and Sexton to their knowledge and skill as surgeons that they are willing to take on cases that have not been performed before at Womack. It is because I so enjoy and respect them that I jumped at the opportunity to join them in the OR. We envision many years of Duke providing excellent care to our service men and women."
Stevie Sexton MD (2020) and Joe Fantony (2018), both Captains in the US Army, of Womack Army Medical Center Urology Specialty Care at Fort Bragg, NC proudly display their DYSURIA scrub caps to let soldiers know that "Urine Good Hands!"
