Welcome!

Welcome to the 2020 Fall semester and to the K-12 Partnership, an outreach program of Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station.

The mission of the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station is to increase our understanding of natural and managed ecosystems and their linkages to society. We are dedicated to sharing our knowledge and expertise with students of all ages!

A main focus of KBS outreach is providing resources and professional development for local teachers. Connect with us!  Explore our website, send an email to K12partnership@kbs.msu.edu!  Follow #KBSK12 on Twitter and join the K-12 Partnership mailing list.

Meet the 2020-2021 fellows for science education and outreach

Each year we have science-focused graduate students complete fellowships in outreach and science education. The KBS Science Education Fellows coordinate the K-12 Partnership workshops, plan and assist with field trips on a variety of topics at KBS, on MSU’s main campus and within our community and local K-12 schools. This opportunity is funded by MSU’s Graduate School.

For the 2020-21 academic year, Joelyn de Lima, Elizeth Cinto Mejia, and Kyle Jaynes are the KBS Science Education Fellows. Let’s learn more about them and their areas of research!

After school program

This year, the KBS outreach team, the Fitzpatrick Lab and Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) Community in Schools program are partnering to offer an enrichment, after-school program to KPS students about Biodiversity science and careers. The 6-week program will have a weekly organismal theme (e.g., birds, amphibians, etc.), biodiversity concepts, and interviews with scientists who study those organisms. The outreach team and Fitzpatrick lab are excited to foster this program into a sustainable form of local outreach for youth to get excited about biodiversity and career opportunities available to them.

K-12 Environmental Education: Guidelines for Excellence Training opportunity

The K-12 Environmental Education: Guidelines for Excellence Professional Development Workshop provides students, parents, caregivers, educators and others a roadmap to achieving environmental literacy by setting expectations for fourth (age 10), eighth (age 14) and twelfth grade (age 18) students and outlining a framework for effective and comprehensive environmental education programs and curricula. These guidelines define the aims of environmental education and were developed collaboratively by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). They set a standard for high quality education, based on what an environmentally literate person should know and be able to do by the time they graduate from high school. They draw on the best thinking in the field to outline the core ingredients of environmental education.  Learn more about the Guidelines.
