Women in Mining BC Awards

Nominate your colleagues at https://wimbc.ca/

Nominations Opening in October for our Signature Awards:  Aurora, BC Mining Diversity and Rising Star shortly.  We created these awards to recognize the work done by women in our industry in BC.  There are so many people educating and inspiring others, and advancing our sector in a myriad of ways that we wanted to provide a forum to share their stories.

Aurora Award: Honours dynamic women in mining who inspire others through thoughtful leadership and creating connections. The aurora is a dynamic and inspiring natural phenomenon, as are the award winners.

BC Mining Diversity Award: Recognized outstanding commitment to encouraging and supporting diversity within the workplace. HR diversity is the focus of attracting, recruiting, and retaining a diverse workforce as well as the advancement or development of individuals within a workforce. Award winners need to work or live in British Columbia.

Rising Star Award, created in honour of Julia Lane:  Julia died in a plane crash during the summer of 2019 while working at an exploration camp.  She is remembered as an inspirational individual who left behind a legacy for all to follow.  She was passionate about her job and had an infectious enthusiasm that created connections with everyone she met, from co-workers to community members to site vistors to the general public.  She was an avid volunteer and a champion for many aspiring geologists.  The Rising Star Award was created to honour women who are “rising stars” in the mining industry.  This could be someone at any stage in their career who is passionate out our industry, dedicated to their work, leads by example, leaves a positive legacy with whoever they meet and dedicates their time and energy to share knowledge and support others.

Gender Diversity in Mining 2020
Courtnay Hughes, MASc.
Senior Consultant, Diversity, and Inclusion – PHC Inc.
Understanding the numbers, research, policies, and bold industry action required for gender equity in mining
Technological, demographic, policy, and cultural shifts are rapidly evolving the employment landscape in Canada and Canadian mining employers are able to harness the benefits of a diverse workforce like never before. Despite this, underrepresentation and underutilization of women in mining continues to characterize the industry.
In this presentation, we will look at the gendered labour impacts of the global pandemic, international, national, and regional labour data (to get a handle on the current employment numbers) and review critical gender research that helps us understand the gendered employment barriers and why the gender gap in mining persists. In the spirit of collaboration, we will share the vision and advocacy work occurring at Women in Mining BC and case examples of mining organizations' efforts, metrics, and lessons learned.
We will discuss how a more robust definition of ‘diversity’ is needed within mining workforce research and how engaging leadership in meaningful advocacy and action - is central to creating more inclusive cultures and ultimately more diverse mining workplaces.
Lastly, we will discuss the advocacy, research, regulations, and policies that are most promising and where we should focus our collective efforts in 2020 and beyond.
