Understanding the numbers, research, policies, and bold industry action required for gender equity in mining
Technological, demographic, policy, and cultural shifts are rapidly evolving the employment landscape in Canada and Canadian mining employers are able to harness the benefits of a diverse workforce like never before. Despite this, underrepresentation and underutilization of women in mining continues to characterize the industry.
In this presentation, we will look at the gendered labour impacts of the global pandemic, international, national, and regional labour data (to get a handle on the current employment numbers) and review critical gender research that helps us understand the gendered employment barriers and why the gender gap in mining persists. In the spirit of collaboration, we will share the vision and advocacy work occurring at Women in Mining BC and case examples of mining organizations' efforts, metrics, and lessons learned.
We will discuss how a more robust definition of ‘diversity’ is needed within mining workforce research and how engaging leadership in meaningful advocacy and action - is central to creating more inclusive cultures and ultimately more diverse mining workplaces.
Lastly, we will discuss the advocacy, research, regulations, and policies that are most promising and where we should focus our collective efforts in 2020 and beyond.
