Regional Update

for the play, active recreation and sport sector
28 August 2020
Kia ora,

Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa opened this week and there is one week until the Community Resilience Fund closes. This week also sees the launch of a regional Play It Safe campaign, and if you haven't already, we ask that you take a few minutes to complete our Central Support Model survey.

Sport NZ updates to Alert Level 2 guidelines for physical activity

As of 27 August, Sport NZ have updated their Alert Level 2 guidelines. Key considerations to note include:

  • Gatherings are defined as contact activities where physical distancing cannot be observed
  • Operators of contact activities will need to consider modified training and play environments until the gathering restrictions are lifted
  • Multiple gatherings of 10 can take place in open spaces if groups are kept separate at all times, entering and leaving, and when using facilities such as toilets
  • Gatherings include players, coaches and officials. Spectators also need to be kept physically distanced if they are being allowed to watch
  • Any facility or activity that can keep all participants physically distanced at all times can accommodate more than 10 participants, with the number involved then decided by the size of the venue/space
  • You must have a plan for the safe operation of your business or service that documents how Government restrictions will be adhered to and all public hygiene and contact tracing requirements are met.
Remember, as of Monday 31 August, facemasks will be mandatory on public transport for anyone 12 years and older. You may be denied passage if you do not have one. Keep up to date with the latest guidance from the Government through the official covid19.govt.nz website, and Sport NZ.

Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa now open

Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa provides funding for quality play, active recreation and sport opportunities and experiences for tamariki and rangatahi. Research shows that there are some groups who are more at risk of missing out or being less active, including those living with a disability, in higher deprivation communities, and girls and young women. Programmes or projects that reach these groups will be prioritised for funding.

You can see the full Community Guidelines, Frequently Asked Questions and the application form on our website. Next week we will share more information around the dates for information workshops and forums that will be open for registrations. The first funding round, which is currently open, will likely close late September, with Sport NZ to confirm this with us next week.

Final reminder for the Community Resilience Fund

The Community Resilience Fund closes Friday 4 September. If you are thinking of applying, check out the full guidelines on our website and apply now! If you have any questions, please email us at crf@sportwellington.org.nz.

Regional plans for the Women + Girls Summit 2020

We are pleased to announce that Sport Wellington has been named as one of the regional hosts for this event. More details will be released closer to the date, but we aim to provide networking opportunities for building connections and to champion the Kaupapa of leadership, participation, value and visibility, central elements to the Summit.

Women in Sport webinar, Change Inspires Change

On 4 September, Women in Sport Aotearoa had organised a Captains Lunch in Auckland. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this has been postponed. In place of this event, they have organised a V-vent, a webinar on "Change inspires Change" for the wider sector to get involved.

The session will involve a panel of speakers and will take inspiration from the lead up to the World Conference of Women and Sport 5-8 May 2022. Keynotes, presentations and live chats will be announced soon. The V-vent will be held September 4 at 12:30pm. Register here to find out more details as they're released.

What should a central support model for our region look like?

There has never been a better time to launch a central support model to meet the needs of our community organisations and sector. In order to determine what services you would like the model to provide, we need to hear from you and your organisation. If you have not already, please take a few minutes to complete the Sport Wellington Central Support Consultation Survey, and if you have any questions email us

Play it Safe Campaign launches

To support physical activity providers in our region, we have developed a multi-media campaign to encourage parents and spectators to respect and adhere to the guidelines set out in your health and safety plans. The campaign, Play It Safe, launches today and will run for at least one week.

If you would like to get involved and support this campaign, you can choose to share the messaging from our Sport Wellington Facebook page this evening and next week, or alternatively email us to request access to the promotional pack that we are developing with digital resources for partners around the region to share.
