TERM 3 - WEEK 6 - 2020
From the Principal's Desk

Congratulations to our Year 12 students on completing their Trial Higher School Certificate (HSC) Examinations this week. Although the Trial Exams do signal the beginning of the final phase of Year 12, there are still a number of vitally important things that need to be completed to ensure a successful and rewarding conclusion to 13 years of school based education.

With this in mind, attendance through to the end of the year is compulsory for all students.  All school related issues must take priority until the end of Term 3. Particularly assessment tasks, completion of VET competencies and HSC exam preparation. Under no circumstance should students be using school hours to attend to matters that do not relate to the successful completion of their HSC.

As such I would ask parents and guardians to support the College in this endeavour by not arranging appointments for or allowing your son/daughter to make appointments for non-school related matters during this time. It is even more important that you do not give them permission to take leave to do part-time work, peruse hobbies or other interests. Students should only be absent in extreme cases such as illness and will require a doctor’s certificate if they are absent for 3 days or more or if they are absent for an assessment task.

Term 3 is also a very important time for our Year 11 students who have entered the final phase of their Preliminary HSC courses.  In the final days of the term they will sit the Preliminary HSC Examinations which will mark the end of the preliminary section of the HSC, with Year 12 HSC course work commencing in Term 4.

Year 11 Semester Awards
Congratulations to all of our Year 11 students who received Semester Awards today. With the impact of COVID– 9, the movement at the end of Term 1 to blended learning and the additional time being granted to students to complete assessment tasks the presentation of awards was held over until this week. These awards recognised the achievement and effort & application of the Year 11 students in the first semester of their Preliminary Higher School Certificate (HSC). The awards are deserved recognition for a job well-done.

Appraisal
In the Newsletter on 14 August I wrote about my upcoming principal appraisal that will take place on 16 September and I asked that members of our community consider being part of the appraisal process. Attached to this edition of the Newsletter is a letter from Paul Wilson, a School Service Consultant from the Catholic Schools Office who will Chair the appraisal. The letter from Paul outlines the purpose and process of the appraisal.

COVID–19 Update
All families will receive an email today containing a letter from our Director of Catholic Schools, Sally Towns and a copy of the COVID–19 Outbreak Management Plan Guidelines. If you do not receive the email, please contact the College office so that we can forward this correspondence to you.

Have a great weekend.

Dear Year 12 Parents/Guardians

HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE VET Examinations
Earlier today all Year 12 students were spoken to about their options in relation to sitting their HSC Examinations in their Vocational Education & Training (VET) courses.

The NSW Education Standards Authority – NESA gives students the option to withdraw from sitting their VET exams for their HSC.  There may be a number of reasons why a student elects not to sit a VET exam and all VET teachers have been discussing these issues with students.  Some important points to understand in relation to this decision are:

  • VET Exams are primarily designed for HSC students to count a Category B Subject to their ATAR.  Because Newman College students do not qualify for an ATAR, this negates this reason but does not exclude the possibility of attempting exams.
  • VET exams have a weighting of 100%.  Unlike other subjects (e.g. English and Maths) that use a combination of a student’s ongoing assessment marks with the final exam mark when calculating the final result.
  • Students who have shown a genuine interest and performed well should be encouraged to sit their VET Examinations.  Staff will ensure that a study guide and sample examinations are distributed to these students – with appropriate follow-up to ensure they are adequately prepared.  The recent Trial HSC exams and a student’s result in it, should be used as a guide to the standard of the HSC exam.
  • Students who are not confident in an examination setting or who are not going to make a genuine effort to prepare for an exam should not sit a VET examination.  Experience has shown that a poor HSC mark may have negatively affected a student’s career options in that VET field
  • The decision to sit or withdraw from an exam has no bearing on the attainment of a VET qualification.
  • The decision to sit or withdraw from an exam has no bearing on the eligibility to receive a HSC.

All Year 12 students will be issued with a Withdraw from VET Examination form on Monday. All students are required to return the completed form to the College Office by Friday 1st September 2017.

If you have any concerns or wish to clarify any issue regarding HSC VET Exams, please don’t hesitate to contact the relevant VET teacher, Mr Tom Moriarty, Mrs Karen Warneken (Leaders of VET) or Mr Andrew Holloway (Leader of Curriculum).

Student Services News

Hi Newman family

After a very chilly start to the week it has been great to experience some warm sunshine as the week comes to an end.

Year 12 return to normal lessons after experiencing the nerves and pressure of their Trial HSC exams. As they receive their results, reward for effort should see plenty of smiles and feelings of achievement. Year 12 will be taking part in their retreat in a different format as explained to them today by Mrs Dempsey. The year group has been split into two groups and the retreat will take place at Newman College on Monday and Tuesday of Week 8.

Year 11 are busily getting used to the Workplace Learning Program each Thursday as well as successfully achieving competencies required in their VET classes.

Mr Lewis spoke to Year 11 this week, in their year meeting, about the importance of conducting themselves in a professional manner with wearing College uniform, appropriate grooming as well as listening to guest speaker Mr Conway about business owner and employer standards. It was a great learning for all of Year 11 moving forward into the workplace, as well as reinforcing the simple expectations that are expected by all students at the College.

Looking ahead at the College, Year 12 will be studying for HSC exams and preparing for their graduation, whilst Year 11 will begin the end Preliminary course exams in Week 10.

Have a great week everyone and remember to strive for progress, not perfection.

Marine News

Marine Studies students are to be congratulated on their sustained efforts and willingness to embrace blended on-site learning during Term 2. However, nothing compares to being able to engage feet-in and hands-on in our local marine environment. With restrictions and Covid-safe plans in place, students were elated and grateful to have the opportunity to resurface and partake in off-site learning this term.

Fishing in the local estuary and coastal walks were an ideal means to reflect and transfer learning from the topics studied in class, namely, Coastal Studies, Sea Birds, and Commercial and Recreational Fishing.

The winter weather has been glorious during our off-site field trips. Whilst on our coastal walks, humpback whales made themselves present and welcomed us on their Northern migration. We have also had the opportunity to observe many sea birds who have been very active with the large numbers of baitfish inshore.

The coastal walks provided a memorable learning experience for students as they were able to gain insight into the history, tradition, and geological facets of our unique, local coastline. Beginning with the local Biripai nation and their inventive and sustainable use of the rich coastal zone of Shelly’s Beach and lagoon. Marraki Kilpatrick our College Youth Ministry Officer, joined us at Shelly Beach and delivered an inspiring Acknowledgment of Country to our students amongst the stunning backdrop of Shelly Beach lagoon. With the assistance of Lisa Connor, our Indigenous Education Worker, students were able to learn and identify a range of coastal bush tucker.

Our walks around Shelly Beach also coincided with the 20th anniversary of the passing of Harry Thompson, who lived in a caravan at Shelly Beach for over 40 years and left a footprint that will be remembered by many locals. Harry was known as “The Mayor’ of Shelly’s as he was formidable in protecting and caring for the pristine environment and the variety of wildlife around Shelly’s. He is now remembered not only through the stories of locals who knew and admired him but in the spectacular wood carvings on display at Harry’s Lookout and Shelly picnic area. Other field trips included a bush tucker walk at the beautifully restored Mrs York's Garden and the informative local Shipwreck walk at Town Beach.

Our local estuary fishing field trips have enabled students to experience the joys and patience associated with fishing, whilst identifying local fish species. Students have learned to rig a fishing rod, collect bait such as pipis and yabbies, identify and handle fish safely as well as consider the responsibilities of sustainable fishing and respect for the marine environment. A whole range of local estuary species were caught and released, including; Tarwine, Yellow Tailed Bream, Flathead, Whiting, Luderick, Flounder, Travalley and Mullet.

We commend the students who have been engaged in Marine Studies and displayed gratitude and respect towards being able to experience what is learned in class by attending weekly off-site field trips.

Workplacement News

Caitlin Walker spent Year 11 Block Week undertaking her Hospitality placement at Discovery Early Education & Care Centre. This proved especially beneficial to Caitlin because she is also a student of Early Childhood Education and Care, in which she recently studied a unit about nutritional requirements and menu planning in childcare centres.

Caitlin had the opportunity to participate in the planning and preparation of healthy meals, snacks and drinks that meet the healthy eating guidelines for children. And when her work was finished for the day, Caitlin would join the children in their play activities around the different rooms at the Centre.

Congratulations Caitlin, we are proud of your efforts and we also thank the team at Discovery for their continued support of our students.

For the next week, across Australia, National Skills Week is being celebrated. National Skills Week acknowledges the role of VET in our economy. VET has produced "industry leaders, it offers great diversity, new and exciting career paths, supports our resources and primary industries, builds our cities, supports our tourism and much, much more".

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we had to postpone our planned activities but that doesn't take away from the skills our students learn here at Newman on a daily basis. Most of our Year 12 students, having just completed their Trial HSC Examinations, are now in full swing to complete their Units of Competency and are focused on the end result. Students are busy completing both theory and practical tasks with workshops also being busy places at the moment with focused students.

Year 11 continue to build on their skills and many are once again engaged in industry and consolidating the skills they are learning in the classroom.
