NEWS & FEATURES

CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS NEW ZEALAND

CVNZ brings people together, to connect with each other and to care for our environment. We work on a diverse range of conservation projects with the goal of enhancing biodiversity through restoring habitat around Canterbury.
We are a not for profit charitable trust and we specialise in recruiting and managing volunteers. We bring people together to connect with each other and to care for the natural places we all cherish.
We work with a variety of different people from all walks of life, working alongside different community conservation groups with the common goal of helping to preserve, protect and enhance biodiversity across Aotearoa New Zealand. We try to make our volunteering events enjoyable and educational. All our work is physical and might involve planting trees, releasing native trees, weeding, picking up rubbish, track maintenance or monitoring threatened species.
We run regular projects throughout the week, as well as projects on the weekend around Christchurch and in Lyttleton Harbour. We also offer overnight volunteering opportunities in Christchurch and our other main sites throughout the country. There are several ways you can be informed about volunteering opportunities:
Join our volunteer email list – email us at Christchurch@cvnz.org.nz
Look on our website www.conservationvolunteers.co.nz under ‘Get Involved’ and ‘Volunteer’, search for projects
Check out our Facebook page for events: www.facebook.com/ChristchurchCVNZ

HILLMORTON HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
Some good news on the horizon...
An epicentre of community activity is planned to help serve the needs of the fast-growing communities within the Southwest of Christchurch.
A Sport and Recreation Hub will be built at Hillmorton High School that will provide an array of activities for everyone. The school hopes that facilities will include a double court gym, fitness centre, 6 tennis court astroturf, a community food zone, an entertainment zone where families and community groups can sing, dance and entertain, and an outdoor adventure circuit.

Exciting fitness programmes and sports events will cater for the whole community, from preschoolers to older adults.
Currently entitled to one court and classrooms indoors, a group of motivated Hillmorton High staff, board and community members have been working hard liaising with Community Groups, Funders and the ministry of Education to pull together this fantastic hub for sport and recreation for use by both the school and our many communities here in the south west of Chch.
They are working to make sure the plans are expanded to have two indoor courts, as well as other multi-use indoor spaces which flow onto 6 new outdoor court spaces (moved from where the new middle school is currently being built) and ultimately, capped off with spaces for food, celebrations and performances.
With a growing number of communities in SW chch, a growing number of students at the school, and a growing percentage of them enjoying sport and recreation, we think this is timely and important.  The new Sport and Recreation Hub built at Hillmorton High School will be a place where everyone can be Active and Healthy Together.
Here's a glimpse of what it looks like...

OAKLANDS -TE KURA O OWAKA
In 2021 Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka will become a rubbish-free school. Staff, students, and the dedicated Eco-Warrior group have come up with ways to achieve that and improve their local environment. Initiatives include a toy swap, making and selling wax lunch wraps, and learning about recycling and composting.  The school’s orchard, vegetable gardens and chicken coop will be reinstated as part of landscaping of the redeveloped campus. The school’s major redevelopment will finish at the end of Term 3, in a month’s time. The redeveloped campus will have no rubbish bins.

HALSWELL HALL AND RECREATE NZ -
FARM TO PLATE PARTNERSHIP

The Halswell Hall has embraced the opportunity to partner with our local Recreate New Zealand team who are based at the Hub. As part of their Farm to Plate initiative, the Hall makes the kitchen and Sunbeam Lounge available to this enthusiastic group of young people on a Thursday.  They plant, tend and grow vegetables at their local “farm” and bring produce to the Hall where the participants learn about where their food comes from, find useful ways to repurpose the produce, experiment with recipes and learn essential kitchen skills.  They have been making soup, pickles, pizza, pesto, and baking among other things.
As part of our partnership, the group spend pproximately an hour of each session completing some valued maintenance work for the Hall.  To date they have washed down all the railing fences and have repainted the back one nearest the Nottingham Stream.  They have sanded, primed, and applied two coats of paint.  Thanks to this willing participation, the Hall has benefitted from the work and the willing and very able painters have learnt some new skills and can be proud of the visible improvement as they travel past on the way to their farm.  They have also been doing a fantastic job of filling our green bin every week as we clear the section nearest to the stream.  It has made a real difference.

GETTING OUR HEADS AROUND RECYCLING
Averil Stevenson, from Eco Central, gave a very informative talk on recycling at Halswell Connections last month.
Recycling changes depending on the markets that Ecocentral can find for our waste.  Currently we can recycle clean paper and cardboard, hard plastics 1,2 and 5 glass, and aluminum and tin cans.
For recyclers to accept our waste to make into new products, we need to keep it as clean and as pure as possible.   When different materials get inadvertently mixed together, it is considered contaminated which lowers the price or makes it unsuitable for recycling. Here are some of the ways to avoid contaminating our recycling:
  1. Remove all lids from the bottles that we recycle. Why? Because lids fall through the sorting grates and contaminate glass and paper.
  2. When it comes to paper, only recycle paper larger than a standard size envelope. If paper is small, it falls through and contaminates other recycling. Shredded paper can go in the green bin. As can greasy or food contaminated pizza boxes.
  3. When opening cans, leave them attached to the can by around 2cm. Rinse and pop in bin. DON”T put loose lids in the recycling. They contaminate the paper. Loose lids can be taking to the eco-drop or just put in the red bin.
  4. NO Soft plastics please! There is currently no market for these items so all soft bags go in the red bin.
  5. The lids from margarine containers go in the red bin. You guessed it, because they can easily slip in with paper and contaminate paper.
  6. All recycling should be clean and dry so it doesn’t contaminate paper and cardboard.
  7. If you buy milk in plastic containers, consider buying it in the bottles you can see through. That uncoloured plastic, when recycled is sold for $700 a ton while the containers that you can’t see through fetch $10 a ton! Plus, you can actually see how much milk you have left.
Keep up the good work with the recycling!

NOTICES

These are uncertain times, and you may be worried about money? Do you need some budgeting advice or help with managing your debt? There are several free budgeting advice services in Christchurch. They can help you put a budget together and work out ways for you to reduce your spending or increase your income. There is information on our website:
https://www.cab.org.nz/article/KB00001442
or you can call us on 0800 367 222 or 03 366 6490 (Mon to Fri, 9am – 5pm)
How do you avoid getting into unmanageable debt?
It mostly boils down to living within your means – in other words, spending no more than the amount you earn and only borrowing money (e.g. a student loan) if you are confident of your ability to pay it back.  You can do this by putting together a budget which lists your total income and all of your expenses. You can also get budgeting and debt management advice online on the Sorted website (www.sorted.org.nz)

HALSWELL HALL – THE CORNERSTONE OF THE HALSWELL COMMUNITY FOR MORE
THAN 100 YEARS

Our Committee is embracing this time to generate “community” in our local area and we look forward to the inaugural “Halswell’s Got Talent” night to be held on Sunday 16th August.  See the separate information about this event and how to purchase tickets on Eventbrite.
Interest has been strong and we are looking forward to celebrating bringing our community together for a fun night. A Silent Auction will be running throughout the evening thanks to the very generous support from our local Community businesses, Spot Prizes and some great entertainment.

Our Spring Community event with local entertainment, quality market stalls and displays by local people, Mike Pero Bouncy Castle, BBQ run by the Halswell Scouts and local “Coffee and Cruz” mobile coffee van on site is in the planning stage but will be on the evening of Friday September 25th.  Demonstrations and entertainment from local talent
and great community connection.  Mark it in your Diary 😊

Your Community Hall is run by a small group of volunteers who oversee the bookings and maintenance of this excellent Community facility.  It is owned by our Community and we always welcome any enquiries regarding bookings for functions or social activities.  At the Halswell Hall we offer a range of facilities with the main Hall having a capacity of 200. We also have an excellent meeting room (The Sunbeam Lounge) which can accommodate up to 50.  This adjoins our upgraded kitchen and is ideal for smaller groups. The meeting room is readily available and we welcome your enquiry.  For any enquiries about availability or our facilities please email us at halswellhallchch@gmail.com.

We still have the ability to engage more members, volunteers and Committee to help oversee the routine running of this valuable
Community facility for the coming year.  If you have a few hours a month available and enjoy being part of the community, we would love to talk to you about how you can help 😊  Just email us at halswellhallchch@gmail.co for further information.

A REFRESHER ON VOTING IN THE GENERAL ELECTION IN OCTOBER

Our voting system in NZ is called MMP, short for Mixed Member Proportional.
Under MMP, you get two votes — a party vote and an electorate vote.

Your Party Vote
The party vote largely decides the total number of seats each political party gets. Parties with a bigger share of the party vote get more seats in Parliament.

Your Electorate Vote
You vote for the candidate you want to represent the area you live in with your electorate vote.
The candidate with the most votes in your electorate wins, and becomes an MP.

Political parties try to win party votes and electorate votes
Political parties must get at least 5% of the party vote OR win an electorate seat before they can have any seats in Parliament.
Because MMP is a proportional system, the share of seats a party wins in Parliament is about the same as its share of the party vote. This applies to big parties and small parties.

How seats in Parliament are allocated
Every candidate who wins an electorate gets a seat in Parliament. They are called electorate MPs. The remaining seats are filled from party lists. Every party has a party list, which is a list of candidates ranked in the order the party wants those candidates to be elected to Parliament. Candidates elected from a party list are called list MPs.

Parties negotiate to form a government
Usually no party gets enough votes to govern alone. Parties often need to come to an agreement with other parties to form a government or pass legislation.
Some types of possible agreements are:
  • coalitions — when two or more parties join together to form a government
  • confidence and supply agreements — when one party agrees to support another on certain issues and laws that are voted on in Parliament.
