Dear <<First Name>>

We trust you are well.

It’s hard to believe that some of you would have already visited us this year and other should have still be looking forward to their visit later this year. What a crazy year and the uncertainty about what is going to happen tomorrow regarding this lock down is a real pain.

Well on a more positive note: We managed to do some local meat hunting with South African hunters to keep the pot going which we are very grateful for and secondly we are very much looking forward to next year to be able to have some of you over!

In this newsletter:

Warm Regards,
Edmond.

1. Corona Virus and bookings
We hope that this pandemic didn’t hit you and your families too hard and that all of you are healthy and safe. We are all fine here in South Africa and we moved to level 2 which means that most businesses can reopen and traveling over state borders will be allowed. It seems like that we will be at level 1 at the end of the year and this will allow international traveling.

We all hoped for international traveling to open but it didn’t happen thus far so the effect of this was that all our International bookings was postpone to next year. This caused that we had to make plans and communicate with hunters to try and fit two years bookings into one year. This resulted that we have limited dates available which we are very grateful for. If you had plans to come and hunt with us in 2021 and you haven’t booked yet please do so because there is a very few open spaces available.

Please hold thumbs with us that international traveling will open soon! We are looking forward to hunt with you all again!

2. Local meat hunters and their pictures

We had to make all kinds of plans to be sure of some income and we managed to cull a few animals and processed the meat at our butchery to sell, we also managed to accommodate local meat hunters that contributed to an income. We were very fortunate to be able to have done this and this caused that we were able to keep all our staff. A lot of game ranches had to retrench their staff and some owners were forced to close down completely. Below is a few pictures of animals harvested with meat hunters.

Edmond also had the opportunity to hunt this year and got two dangerous game animals. A hippo with his .375 H&H and a lioness with his bow. The warthog was caught by the lioness just before Edmond stalked her. He had to shoot the warthog as well because it was badly injured by the lioness.
3. Wildlife in general and Harloo contributing to conservation.

3.1 In a few newsletters ago we mentioned that we (Harloo Safaris) are now part of the IBA (Important bird and biodiversity area). Well by being part of that we had to create Harloo into a vulture safe zone. There is a few criteria to be followed to be able to qualify as a vulture safe zone. One of the criteria is to urge on our hunters to hunt with lead free bullets. Vultures get lead poisoning by eating bones and meat from animals that was harvested with lead bullets.

Please read more about this below.

Vultures are among Africa’s most threatened wildlife, with five of South Africa’s nine species listed as Critically Endangered or Endangered by the IUCN. Within southern Africa, vultures have suffered rapid population declines of up to 80% over the last decade and have been lost across large portions of their historical distributions. Vultures provide vital ecosystem sanitation services and play a critical role in the health of the environment. Although pertinent threats such as habitat loss, persecution, collisions with and electrocutions on powerlines are drivers, their demise is largely due to direct and indirect poisoning. Throughout southern Africa, the threats driving vulture population declines are complex and vary substantially from one region to the next. To address this dynamic threat landscape, the Multi-species Action Plan for the conservation of African-Eurasian Vultures (Vulture MSAP) (Botha et al. 2017) has identified the implementation and establishment of Vulture Safe Zones (VSZs) as a priority conservation intervention. The application of VSZs provides targeted, spatially explicit conservation action to address the major risks to vultures. Within these zones, the most prevalent threats to vultures can be identified, actively mitigated and, where possible, removed from the landscape. An important step in this process is the direct involvement of landowners in the establishment of VSZs, convincing owners of large tracts of land to manage their properties in ways that will create safe spaces for vultures. This ensures that existing vulture populations can stabilize and persist. Importantly, the application of VSZs has the potential to encourage vultures back to their traditional home ranges and breeding sites.

4. Maintenance
At the moment we are fixing roads and maintain our firebreaks. It is the peak of our fire season and a wild fire on Harloo will be disastrous. We do plan controlled burns for later in October this year.
