M/V Grande Congo - Repair of tail shaft damage by welding

Have you ever experienced damages on your tail shaft
from removal of a hydraulic coupling?
We often receive tail and propeller shafts with damages on the coupling end.
A damage that often occurs when removing the hydraulic coupling, leaving the shaft with scratches and sometimes even deep impact marks.

No matter how or why the damage occurred, it is a huge cost saver to have a
sub-contractor, who can repair the shaft fast and with full approval from the
classification societies.

MarineShaft can repair this type of shaft damage by laser cladding!
Recently, we carried out one of these types of repairs and I want to share it with you.

We received a request concerning a repair of the tail shaft end for the
vessel M/V Grande Congo.

The areas on the tail shaft end were damaged approximately 1.5 mm in depth.
The damaged tail shaft had the dimensions Ø1500/725 x 8692 mm.
It was sent to us by truck from Italy.

Once in our workshop, the shaft was inspected, and we did a run out test. A 3rd party (Force Technology) supervised our penetration inspection of the transitions and roundings.
No cracks were detected and RINA accepted our repair plan by laser cladding:
  • Machining of damaged area on tail shaft, approx. L800mm.
  • The diameter of the damaged coupling end was Ø590 mm.
  • Laser cladding of machined area with two layers of Inconel 625.
  • Machining of laser cladding area to final dimensions.
After the last non-destructive crack test by 3rd party, a Rina Surveyor came to our workshop for the final inspection and approval.
This repair was carried out within two weeks.
