Hey there 👋

This past month I got feedback that my "Sum' Wear in Space" playlist was perfect for a late night drive. I often say that I approach my playlist curation like a music supervisor; I picture a cinematic scene in my head and then search my musical memory for the perfect songs and sequences to fit said visuals. Driving down highway 405 with only my thoughts & I was one such imagery I conjured when I made the playlist, so the fact that someone else’s listening experience aligned with the source material delighted me.

It gave me an idea: if you’re reading this and have ever had a specific visual or mind movie that you’d like to realize, please send it my way and I am more than happy to collaborate with you to create a playlist around it! It could be something you describe to me, as you see it in your mind’s eye, or it could be a photo or illustration.

Theme of this Month:
🎹 Of Chords I'm Still Here

My mom is a piano teacher and I feel like the foundation of my music taste has been shaped by the piano notes that came drifting through the wall during the music lessons she taught when I was growing up. One thing she always told me is that despite her all-encompassing love for music, jazz was something she never understood. She emphasized how the sporadic and random nature of it all had always confused her because it gave her trouble in trying to picture where the music would "lead" to.

But there's so much beauty in the unexpected; a lot of us are forced to relearn this crucial lesson this year. The events that unfold around and in front of us often surprise us, not always in the best ways, but we ultimately have to trust that there is an inexplicable, divine force that brings it all around. In both jazz and a lot of modern R&B tracks, you often hear chords and harmonies that initially sound jarring or cacophonic to your ears. Yet if you allow yourself to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, you might see just how it works out in the end — maybe even appreciate it.

For this month’s playlist, I've compiled a list of jazz drenched tracks that mirror all the warm vibes I’m sending out to you all, vibes that feel like a hug and a sigh under my breath that says “this will all be okay.” The groovy sounds of the saxophone and the trumpet croon at us, signaling the end of a rather short and faulty summer, but hopefully also the start of something better and brighter.

Listen now!

I hope you enjoyed this!

I'll be back next month on the 25th with a newly curated playlist on Spotify. If you're getting value out of this newsletter consider sharing it on Twitter!
