Ryerson University Office of the Registrar Academic Advising

Hello Advising Network,

Here we go! It feels a little different this year, ok a lot different, but it's still that magical time of year when back to school is just around the corner...

See below for some important updates about our remote semester.

ServiceHub Updates
As usual, ServiceHub has some great term-start up information and videos. In addition, here are a few extra details:
Verification of Enrolment
Students receiving the CPP Student Benefit normally have their Declaration of Attendance forms signed at the ServiceHub. However, due to COVID-19, Service Canada is temporarily waiving the requirement to have educational institutions complete the form. Students can send their forms directly to Service Canada. More information on CPP forms can be found at Letters and Verification Requests.

Course Intentions
Don't forget to remind students to complete their Winter 2021 course intentions during the open enrollment period. This is important because:

  • Students are loaded into their required courses, but need to add their own electives.
  • If students have applied for OSAP, Student Financial Aid confirms funding for the entire year and students will receive their fall disbursement sooner.
  • If students have received a renewable entrance scholarship, it's a condition to be enrolled in a full-time course load for Fall and Winter.
  • If students require a Proof of Enrolment to confirm their RESP or CPP funding, their enrolment status (e.g. full-time or part-time) is confirmed based on their course enrolments/intentions on RAMSS.
  • It facilitates course planning for Winter Term.

Tuition Waiver
If you have a staff tuition waiver for a Fall 2020 Chang School course, you're now able to enrol yourself in the course online. Within two weeks of enrolling, your tuition waiver will be applied and a refund issued for the waived tuition fees. A refund cheque will be mailed to the address on file on your student account. To avoid delays, confirm on RAMSS that your mailing address is up-to-date.

Alternatively, you can enrol into your course(s) by forwarding a copy of the tuition waiver email to servicehub@ryerson.ca, and attaching a completed Chang School Mail-in Enrolment Form. Do not complete the Credit Card Authorization section, as this cannot be accepted via email. Allow up to three business days for processing. Once your enrolment is complete, confirm your outstanding fee balance on RAMSS and pay your fees through online banking.  Contact servicehub@ryerson.ca if you have further questions.

Academic Considerations and Grade Standing Appeals

The recording and detailed FAQs for the recent information session are now available. Contact advisingnetwork@ryerson.ca for access to the shared resource folder. Here's what you need to know about new and revised Senate policies for fall.
❗ An important note for Fall 2020 Academic Consideration relating to COVID-19: Students who miss an assessment due to cold or flu-like symptoms, or due to self-isolation, are currently not required to provide a health certificate. Other absences must follow Senate Policy 167 on Academic Consideration.
Experiential Learning Opportunities
As you can imagine, experiential learning and placements are being re-imagined for this upcoming year, and faculties are looking to develop new, remote opportunities, beyond the client-facing opportunities we usually think of. Do you have a new initiative, research project, policy review, program or resource you would like developed? Or perhaps you have an idea for another opportunity?

Contact Anita Abraham in Experiential Learning, Kristie Wright in Social Work, or Saira Batasar-Johnie in Child and Youth Care for more details. Thank you for your support!

For Students

TRSM's awesome Advising Video Development Committee has made some wonderful videos with tips about keeping track of significant dateshow to plan your courses, the importance of advising reports, and more. Check out their Advising website and other great videos.  Nice work Steven Kavaratzis, Shannon Nguyen, Lorra Jean-Price, and Maria Sarri!

Shared Resource Folder 📁
Check out the academic advising resource folder for staff and faculty, which includes content from information sessions, Registrar contacts, communication templates and more! Email advisingnetwork@ryerson.ca for access.
And Finally...

This is a start-up like no other, and while it's exciting, nerve-wracking, and sometimes a lot of work developing new ways of doing things, no matter our delivery method, supporting students is still at the heart of what we do.

And while I miss seeing you around the halls and at information sessions, it's still nice hearing from you online. Upcoming information sessions will be posted on the HR Training Calendar as they are developed, with a focus on supporting our students remotely.

Be sure to encourage new members of your team to subscribe to the newsletter, and let me know of any changes to your Academic Program Administration Contacts.

Sending you extra good wishes for this extra-ordinary start-up,

Michelle
