CRC Launches New Website
We gave our website crcfl.net a new "look" thanks to the help of Jackie Cote at Flourish Design Studio - who went above and beyond! Content and resources can now be found more easily on the site. Don't miss our beautiful new calendar to keep you up-to-date on all that is happening at CRC!

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American men, but it can often be treated successfully. Check out the helpful information from the American Cancer Society about risk factors and reducing risk.

CRC offers a monthly Prostate Cancer Group which meets virtually on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 5:30-7pm for support, education programs, and discussions related to prostate cancer. Open to men & their caregivers. (Men with prostate cancer are encouraged to attend the Friday Men's Virtual Breakfast Club as well.) Click here to learn how to join us!

Did you know that African American men are at an increased risk for developing prostate cancer over white men and other men of color? One in six African American men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. Overall, African American men are 1.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with—and 2.2 times more likely to die from—prostate cancer than white men. Click here for more information and resources.

Cancer patients often ask about diet and nutrition approaches for reducing risk and supporting survivorship. This Guide from the University of California, San Francisco, is one of the best guidebooks we have found. While it was developed for those living with prostate cancer, the general approach can be considered appropriate for all cancers.

The new American Urological Association (AUA) guideline provides direction for the use of hormonal therapy (or androgen-deprivation therapy, ADT) for men with multiple categories of advanced and metastatic prostate cancer.

Volunteer Program Update
Much like other non-profit agencies, CRC has had to adapt to the “new normal”. While our Hospital and Reception Support volunteers have been suspended, we continue to engage volunteers in productive and meaningful ways. Here is a peek at what’s been happening:

  1. Friendly Calls and Cards - volunteers check in via phone with clients on a weekly basis, or write to clients on a monthly basis, sending beautiful cards and “thinking of you” messages.

  2. Cayuga Medical Center COVID screening - CRC volunteers who have been cleared by the hospital take a shift (or more) at a screening table to ensure that staff, patients, and visitors are safe to enter CMC

  3. Donor Stewardship - volunteers make calls and send letters to our donors, thanking them for supporting CRC

  4. Projects - volunteers are able to help remotely with numerous projects, including database work, research, and writing

  5. Fundraising events - volunteers organize and execute fundraisers, both virtual and community-based

  6. College Students - interns and students are working remotely to provide operational support to staff and unique opportunities for our clients, such as hosting Game Nights

  7. Financial Advocacy - specially-trained volunteers assist clients with financial issues related to their cancer diagnosis

For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact Sharon Kaplan, Director of Volunteers, sharon@crcfl.net. Visit our volunteer page for more information.

Volunteer Spotlight
Karl Paulnack is a long-term survivor of pancreatic cancer and completed a month-long inpatient stay, including a Whipple procedure, at Tompkins Community Hospital (predecessor to Cayuga Medical Center) in 1994. Currently on a final sabbatical from Ithaca College, where he served as dean of the music school since 2013, he feels passionate about giving back to the place that supported him through his cancer journey. Karl is a nationally recognized pianist, educator, author and speaker, and remains active as a performer, presenter, board member and consultant to a number of musical and educational organizations. Karl’s goal is to engage in meaningful personal support with patients undergoing cancer treatment. While the pandemic has certainly changed the look of how volunteers interact with patients, he has embraced his role as COVID screener at the hospital. Karl actively engages with patients heading to and from treatment and finds these personal connections very rewarding. He plans to add “Friendly Caller” to his volunteer activity, extending his support to CRC clients over the phone. Karl lives in Ithaca with Dave, his husband of 28 years, and their dog Mato, 85 pounds of love and mischief in a three-year-old Labrador/Bulldog mix.

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to these fabulous volunteers:
