Black National Convention

BACKGROUND:

Black August centers around the topic of Black rebellions in the US, and was first commemorated in 1970 after the death of two Black activist brothers (read the full story here). As it happens, their death, Emmet Till’s death, the Watts Rebellion, the March on Washington and even Nat Turner’s rebellion all occurred in August, hence the designation of this month as a time to reflect on and celebrate the uprisings and rebellious acts that have shaped the civil rights movement.

This year for Black August, M4BL is organizing a political convention to ratify a new Black agenda moving into November.

ACTION:

Watch the Black National Convention on August 28th, starting at 4pm west coast time. Familiarize yourself with the priorities of the M4BL at this key moment when they create a political platform for 2020. After the convention, their list of demands will be presented to the president-elect as demands for the first one hundred days in office, as well as to Democratic political candidates, who will have to choose whether they’re for it or against it.

Save the Date for the 47th Annual Neil Kelly Memorial Virtual Auction!
We are excited about our virtual event. Our wonderful auctioneer, Ian Lindsay, and his team have mastered the art of combining fundraising and entertainment. It's an interactive event. It's more accessible to people who would not be able to attend an in person event. There's no admission, friends and relatives who live out of town can participate. There's less time commitment. No baby sitter required. And, it's COVID friendly!

So mark your calendars for October 24th! The show will start at 5:30.
We'll send out the link for registration in September. More information to come!
FREE FOOD MARKET THIS THURSDAY

Open to anyone who needs some extra food. Please tell your friends and neighbors. We'll have fresh produce as well as dry goods. Open from 12:30 to 2:00 PM in the Community Center Gym. Use 8th street entrance. We'll have cones set out for social distancing and volunteers will set boxes or bags of food on a table at the door. No address or ID required. Address to give friends is 4940 NE 8th Avenue.
Our black and brown neighbors drive by with huge smiles on their faces. People honk and wave. Police officers drive by and wave, too. Neighbors hear the bells ring at 5 when we start and again at 6 when we end. We want everyone to know we are fighting for racial justice. They can't see us writing letters in our homes. They can't see us in the crowds downtown. They can't see us reading, learning, listening, and working from home.
They see us on Alberta and they know we stand with them.
Come join us. We would love to see you!
