Members, friends and partners............

Did you Know.........

  • JPCC will hold the Annual General Meeting on September 15th at 10 am via ZOOM?  As much as we'd like to host this as an in-person event, the Executive has concluded this virtual meeting is the least intrusive way to move forward with the new Chamber year.  Yes, it's that time, that means the annual budget will be put to the floor, officers will be elected and the membership will hear from the current board with year-in-review reports that will obviously include the unprecedented nature of Covid-19 and it's overall impact to our organization, businesses, residents and community.  A special edition of Things you NEED to KNOW will be sent out to the membership on Tuesday, September 1st, 2020 in accordance with the Chamber by-laws and objectives announcing this meeting.  Any member in good standing who registers for the event will receive the official agenda, draft budget and a proxy form to submit if virtual attendance is not an option for the m

  • The Ambassador and Business Awards Gala is also moving forward? Albeit in a different way - 1/2 virtual with broadcasts on Facebook with nominees beginning October 18th and culminating in the winner's reveal at a reception tentatively set for October 23rd at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, enabling us to implement public safety protocols while celebrating business in our community.  Watch this space for nomination forms and event details next week!

  • While everyone enjoys the camaraderie that is the nature of NETMA the Executive has also agreed that it is too soon to hold an event that is, by it's nature, difficult to deliver with Covid-19 protocols necessary.  To that end, we thank Wild Orchid Salon and Spa for offering to hold the first of the season NETMA events but it will not proceed.  Announcements regarding future NETMA gatherings will be forthcoming - again, watch this space and thank you for supporting our decision to respect public safety.

Warning - The elk rutting season has begun!

The elk rutting season has begun and will last until mid-October.

What you need to know

  • Keep at least 30 metres away from all elk and never get between a male and the females
  • Bull elk become extremely aggressive protecting their harems during the mating season
  • Do not park your vehicle between a male and the females; elk may charge at your vehicle, which may result in damage

Tips on how to avoid and handle elk encounters

  • Travel in a group
  • Watch for elk at all times and detour around them
  • If possible walk around elk on the high side of a slope or up-hill
  • Stay back at least 30 metres
  • Keep your dog on a leash at all times
  • An unleashed dog may prompt an elk to become aggressive as they view the dog as a predator (wolf or coyote)
  • Carry pepper spray, a walking stick or an umbrella as protection
  • Act dominant if an elk gets too close
    • Raise your arms or any big object (jacket or umbrella) to make yourself appear larger, maintain eye contact, and never turn your back or run
    • Climb a tree or keep an object, like a tree or large rock, between you and the elk
    • Back slowly out of the area
    • Warn other hikers of an elk ahead and report the incident immediately to Jasper Dispatch at 780-852-6155
  • If you are knocked down or fall, get up and try to move to cover or use an object to protect yourself
  • Do not play dead
