Lucie Mikolajková: Talk with a translator
25th September from 6 PM

Freelance translator, editor and proofreader Lucie Mikolajková will talk about her experience with translating fiction, film and television screenplays, and professional texts.
The program will be in Czech.

In the September conversation club you can meet our Czech tutor Hanka. Attendance is free of charge. If you want to join the club, all you have to do is be able to hold a conversation in English and registrer in advance via e-mail:

Film screening

10th September 2020, 4 PM - 5 PM
The documentary film Songs of the Homeland follows the history of TEJANO music of the Mexico-American community in Texas. Tejano (or Tex-Mex) music was influenced also by Polka, Waltz and accordion melodies which were brought to America by Czech and German imigrants in the 19th century.
All film screenings in American Corner Ostrava are free of charge.

Study group: American classics

“A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read.” - Mark Twain
Do you wish to discuss the classic works of American literature more in depth and learn about the historical background that inspired them? Do you need to expand your "required reading" list, or finally read the books you have heard so much about? Join our American classics study group! A short theoretical introduction will be followed by a discussion. Participation is free of charge.
The meetings will be held in Czech.

Creative writing club

Do you enjoy writing? Or do you want to pick it up? Practice your creativity with us and the many exercises we have prepared for you.

Book recommendations

We are a part of the City library of Ostrava and in addition to our regular program we offer a variety of books and magazines. Our collection of graphic novels and non-fiction is rather small so far, but it will keep growing.
Would you like to find out which other books are available in American Corner? Access our online catalog anywhere. You can reserve books directly in the catalog and we'll have them ready for your next visit. If you are not a member of the library, you can sign up for a library card, or read your chosen books and magazines on site without the need to register.
