Welcome to the NSW Swimmer
August 2020 Edition

In this issue:

New health guidelines for community sport

Additional recommendations for community sport came into effect last week (from 19 August 2020) and will remain effective for a period of six weeks (until 30 September 2020). The key purpose of these recommendations is to reduce community transmission by ceasing activities that result in the mixing of participants from different regions. You can read the full letter from the NSW Chief Health Officer to community sporting organisations and the NSW Office of Sport fact sheet that provides added detail to the above recommendations.

While these recommendations are not enforceable, we encourage our members to fully comply with these updated health guidelines to reduce the chance of transmission and limit the potential for the restrictions to be extended beyond 30 September 2020.

As such, we ask that:

  • Swimmers only compete at meets in their local areas
  • Club/event organisers ensure that no out-of-area participants attend their events.
For the purposes of this recommendation, 'local area' is defined by our 12 swimming association areas

Mental Health Matters: free training for SNSW members

Do you know how to spot the signs of mental illness? Would you know what to say or do to help someone who's struggling to cope with a difficult time or situation?

In just 90 minutes, you can get some simple and practical advice. It's all you need to make a big difference - perhaps even a lifesaving difference - to someone in need.

Swimming NSW has partnered with Australian Red Cross to launch Lane Ropes for Life - a program that will give members living in regional, rural, and remote areas of NSW access to FREE mental health training.

The training will be delivered via a series of interactive online and face-to-face workshops and will focus on helping Swimming NSW members, staff and volunteers to better recognise the signs of mental health concerns within their swimming communities, and offer practical advice for responding to mental health challenges, including where to go for more help. We encourage our members to take advantage of this training opportunity.

Upcoming workshops:

Each workshop has a maximum of 20 participants and members should only sign up for their area’s workshop. For example, the North Coast workshop is only open to Swimming North Coast clubs and members. Swimming NSW and Australian Red Cross will release further dates to coincide with demand.

Safe Sport Framework changes

Be sure to familiarise yourself with the new documents, which are binding on all Swimming Australia member organisations and their members, so we can ensure our sport remains fun, enjoyable, and safe for all!

Calling all
Olympic Change-Makers

The Australian Olympic Change-Maker Program seeks to identify and bring together young leaders in sport who are 'making a difference' in their school or local community.

The program is open to any Year 10, 11 or 12 students who actively demonstrate leadership through sport and/or use sport as a vehicle to improve health and wellbeing, and drive social change in their school or local community. This can take on many forms – from major projects to small examples of daily positivity. This is a chance to recognise their fantastic work in leading teams, coaching juniors, supporting seniors, making a difference at a sports club, a national cause or effecting change on the world stage.

Nominations close 11.59 pm, Monday 31 August 2020

Australian sports industry census

Want to contribute to our sporting future? This is your chance.

The 2020 National Sports Census is now open to every person working in Australian sport - whether they are a paid staff member, board member, contractor or volunteer employee. It doesn't matter if you work for a state, territory or national sporting organisation, sports business, council, industry body, or other organisation within Australian sport - the Census is designed to capture the sentiment of everyone involved in sport.

The results are anonymous and the aggregated information will be made available to all ASPA members as well as the sports federations (SportWest, Sport NSW, QSport, Sport SA & Vicsport) to help drive discussions and planning into a post-COVID-19 world.

The survey is open until mid-September.

Swimming Australia community impact study

As Australia's largest participation sport, with 5 million national participants, swimming is a quintessential Australian pastime that is integral to the social and economic fabric of this country.

The results of Swimming Australia's community impact study has found that swimming has a total economic and community impact of over $3.7 billion per annum on Australia, which includes a community health impact of $135 million per year and a $4.35 billion lifetime health contribution.

The independent national study, funded with the support of Sport Australia, also found swimming contributes to a broad range of social benefits to local communities, including community cohesion and greater social inclusions, and teaches life skills such as discipline, hard work, determination, work ethic, time management, and commitment.

Stressed about study?

COVID-19 is having a very real and significant impact on every aspect of lives, including for high school students preparing for their HSC.

A ReachOut Australia national survey of young people found that 38 per cent of young people rated study stress as one of their top concerns. Our mental health partner has also found that young people are seeking online support in record numbers to help them cope with study stress as end-of-year exams and assessments approach, as well as a spike in demand from parents looking for support to help their teen manage study stress, up 430 per cent year-on-year.

If you or your child is worried about their upcoming exam preparation or experiencing study stress, this collection of resources will get you through everything from studying at home, exam stress, and fear about the future.
