Hey Folks!

We hope that you're having a safe and refreshing summer given the circumstances! We appreciate all of the members & volunteers who have been actively involved in rehabbing our CLT homes, rallying for tenants rights, and creating art with us! We're excited to share what we've been up to along with some ways for y'all to stay involved.

We're also having our Outreach & Engagement committee meeting this Thursday from 5-6pm on a computer near you. Click here for the meeting link. We'll be talking about developing our member training program.

City Roots Community Land Trust has aligned with many local organizations to create the Rochester Housing Justice Alliance. After our Eviction Blockade rally this month, the rent moratorium has been extended to October 1st for all evictions filed during the pandemic! However, there is still much to be done. The RHJA has already trained over 120 people on how to have successful eviction blockade's where no one is displaced. Our training this past Monday was huge success. Be sure to be on the lookout for upcoming trainings! 
In partnership with the Yale Environmental Protection Clinic, City Roots Community Land Trust released a guide on August 4th called Confronting Racial Covenants: How They Segregated Monroe County and What to Do About Them.  Richard Rothstein, an expert on segregation stated, “We abolished segregation in all these other areas of American life, but we’ve left untouched the biggest segregation of all, which is residential segregation, and we accept it as part of the natural environment because we think it all happened by accident.” 
The study details the widespread use of these restrictive covenants and how it kept non-white people in underdeveloped, under-resourced neighborhoods."For communities across New York to have effective systems for dealing directly with racial covenants, individuals, organizations, and local officials must push for strong anti-covenant laws at the local and state level."

Meet our new team members, James Dietz & Anastajah Haynes! 
Originally from Buffalo, James graduated from University of Rochester in 2019 with a B.A. in Political Science and will be working with City Roots Community Land Trust and Taproot Collective for the 2020-2021 Rochester Youth Americorps VISTA service year! He is excited to help create a sustainable partnership between City Roots and Taproot, as well as with other organizations in the City of Rochester.

Anastajah grew up on the southside of Syracuse, and graduated with a B.S. in Sociology & Political Science. She has filled our Community Outreach Coordinator role, and is eager get started bridging the gap of economic & social inequality for many families in Rochester.

THIS SATURDAY! HELP ANA MOVE IN
All hands on deck! City Roots member Ana Martinez, is moving into a newly rehabbed, high quality CLT unit this weekend, Saturday, August 29th and we need your help moving her in and making her feel at home. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Anastajah at ana.haynes@cityrootsclt.org for the time and location.
Our friends at the Rochester Mutual Aid Network are having a supply drive this Saturday at the Flying Squirrel Community Space, please donate what you can! If you're interested in volunteering with the RMAN, they're signing up volunteers at the event!
Common Ground Health, Foodlink, and the City of Rochester are collaborating to create a food policy council to identify opportunities and gaps to expand equitable access to quality food locally. They will be hosting webinars to provide more information about food policy councils, this project, and opportunities for individuals and organizations to get involved. If you have ideas about food or food policy in Rochester, join us to learn, connect, and build a movement to create positive change!

Membership

City Roots Community Land Trust is a 501.c.3 community controlled non-profit working to establish lasting affordability in our communities here in Rochester, NY. City Roots acquires land and improvements (houses, apartments, commercial buildings, gardens, playgrounds, etc) and then puts it to our members to decide how it should be used.

You qualify as a member if you live within the City Rochester and you meet two of the three qualifications: 1) Pay $25 annual dues; 2) Attend at least 4 CLT meetings within 12 months; and 3) Volunteer in some capacity on behalf of the CLT.
