The general election is Nov. 3, and early voting starts on Oct. 24 in FL. In Polk County, early voting starts on Oct. 19. That may seem like a while from now, but Election Day is only 46 days away.
We want you to be ready to cast your ballot with all the confidence in the world, so we’re breaking down all the 2020 election must-knows for you. In Polk County, you’ll be voting for a Representative in Congress, State Representatives, and of course, the President of the United States. There are several ballot measures this year — AKA state amendments — and our local election will take place in 2021.
In this guide, you’ll find registration + polling information, maps of local voting districts, a breakdown of candidate priorities, a timeline of important dates, and an election dictionary of terms you should know.

○ Polk County Public Schools has announced the development plans for a new K-5 elementary school located in Mulberry at 4815 Bailey Rd. The school will provide enrollment relief for the James W. Sikes and R. Bruce Wagner elementary schools. The school is set to open in time for the 2021-2022 school year with a student capacity of 1,000. The $34-million school is partially financed by the district’s half-cent sales tax initiative. 🏫

○ Local faith-based groups across Lakeland have put together a Day of Unity this Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Lake Mirror Amphitheater (121 S. Lake Ave.). The goal of the event is to take the next steps towards racial equality within the City of Lakeland. (The Ledger)
Civic
○ Three proposed toll-roads have not proven to be financially feasible, including a connector from Polk County to Collier County. At this time, none of the tolls meet the standards set by the Florida Department of Transportation in terms of finances. An analysis provided by Cornell Consulting recommends the task force halts further development of these roads. (The Ledger)

○ The Red Tent Initiative is calling for artists & musicians for it’s 2020 collaborative fundraiser. Be sure to read up on the initiative and message them on Facebook for artist + musician submissions. 🎨
Family
○ Pack up the kids and head to calmer waters. SeaWorld Orlando will host its Flicks & Frights drive-in movie event starting on select Fridays and Saturdays from Sept. 19-Oct. 31 for $40 per vehicle. Participants can enjoy movies from the car with a family-friendly movie screening at 7:45 p.m. and a more spooktacular movie at 10:30 p.m. To kick off the ghoulish event, enjoy Hotel Transylvania with the kiddos followed by It for the big kids. There will be local food truck vendors on site + participants are required to wear masks outside of their vehicles. 📽️ (Bay News 9)

○ The first day of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah. The holiday begins today at sundown and will end at nightfall on Sun., Sept. 20. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and is one of the most important holidays in the Jewish calendar filled with mitzvahs, food, and special traditions. If you're looking to attend a service, Temple Emanuel Lakeland will be hosting virtual services + Chabad of Lakeland will be holding socially-distant services throughout the weekend. 🍯

○ ATTN: Jack-O-Lanterns wanted. In preparation for the upcoming Jack-O-Lantern Jamboree, Polk County Parks + Recreation is calling for volunteers in need of community service hours. Volunteers must be 14+ and will assist with kids games, trick or treating in the village, and the pumpkin patch. The Jamboree is set to take place on Oct. 17 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at Simmers-Young Park (339 American Spirit Rd.). 🎃

○ Lakeland Regional Health’s Respiratory Care Center is now offering next-day COVID-19 test results. Those with symptoms can schedule an appointment by calling 863-284-5000. Appointments are required. Ⓟ
○ Frostproof’s head coach has tested positive for COVID-19, postponing The Bulldogs’ games until Oct. 2, when they are scheduled to play against Lake Placid. The school’s football program is now the third in the county to be temporarily delayed due to COVID-19. (The Ledger)
○ Polk Pride, FL will resume meetings on the second Monday of every month starting Oct. 12, after a six-month hiatus. The meeting will take place at the Beacon Hill Fellowship (220 W. Beacon Rd.) in the parking lot to allow for social distancing. Participants are required to bring their own chairs and mask.
○ The Crickette Club of Bartow’s Halloween Parade is officially cancelled this year. The news came Wednesday afternoon in a Facebook message from the club to LALtoday.
○ On Thursday, the Florida Department of Health announced 3,255 new cases of COVID-19 and 147 additional deaths in Florida.
