Social Awareness Resources

With these Social Awareness resources - SEL guides with videos and activities and Social Justice teaching guides by grade level - our intent is to provide activities and experiences that promote generous collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
These Five Activity Guides define the core competencies of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as they relate to youth finding their personal and collective role in community.

The videos and activities provided help develop SEL in a remote setting, or in-person, after youth have experienced uncertainty. These guides focus on the five core competencies of SEL:
  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Responsible Decision-Making
  • Social-Awareness
  • Relationship Skills

Our new Social Justice resource guides, organized by grade spans for elementary, middle and high school students, include lessons, literature guides, video, and activities to build community even when we are not in person. With a rich tradition of social action and citizenship in our country, in a time of crisis, we look to generosity to guide our next steps for more conversation.

The guided facilitation takes learners through a journey of empathy, making decisions, taking voluntary action, and finally sharing stories from diverse perspectives.

The shared experience of reading a book is powerful in many ways. Children learn reading, listening, and comprehension skills, while together you celebrate the joys and sorrows that good literature presents.

Our newest literature guides include books that feature diverse perspectives and help teach generosity, social awareness, and respect for others. Literature brings us closer and introduces real issues and broadens experience in a safe environment.

Connecting Virtually in Community

The demands of staying safe during the COVID-19 crisis can feel isolating and difficult. Young people miss their friends and the routines of classes, sports, and social interactions.

In times of uncertainty the question of “how and where do we fit in all of this?” is on everyone's mind. As caring adults, we can help young people find their fit by building empathy and generosity.

This article curated by our Executive Director, Betsy Peterson, provides directions to a short activity, book suggestions, project ideas, and other resources to help you and your students navigate learning and connecting in a virtual community.

This new facilitator guide provides guidance for a year of engagement with youth who are learning about philanthropy, service, or their role in community as engaged citizens.

The seven content blocks loosely follow the service-learning process that challenges youth to match their interests to community needs through investigation, preparation/planning, action, reflection and demonstration. Videos, activities, and projects may be utilized in order or selected a la carte style to meet the needs and interests of your youth program.
