SEPTEMBER NEWS
Can you believe we're entering the holiday season? Let's check out what's happening around regional Queensland and more!

Highlights include the launch of Arts Queensland's new funding streams and the creative ways artists are responding to creation in lockdown - along with many more stories and features from around the RASN regions from facts and figures to professional meet-ups and pivots!

Let's start with some big news about RASN in Far North Queensland!
PROVIDER SPOTLIGHT
FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND
Arts Nexus
Nexus Joins the Network

Arts Nexus has been contracted as the Far North Queensland provider for the Regional Arts Services Network (RASN), working in partnership with the Cook Shire Council to also host the Regional Arts Officer for Cape York and Torres Strait Islands.

Arts Nexus has been a contributor to cultural and economic planning in the region for over twenty-five years, and working with the other providers across the state, will contribute to building a strong arts and cultural network that delivers support and drives initiatives and outcomes that align with regional priorities.

Working in partnership with Far North Queensland LGAs and Arts Queensland to deliver the final stage of this program is exciting for this fit-for-purpose organisation. Arts Nexus’s objective is to advocate for the arts, cultural and creative industry practitioners, and forge partnerships and engagement with government and the cross-sector. Shortly, a Regional Arts Officer will commence operation up North, in addition to the existing Regional Arts Officer based in Cooktown. Together, these officers will support the arts sector across Far North Queensland, Cape York and the Torres Strait.

Born from the red sandhills of the Queensland outback, the artists known as Two Sisters Talking work in collaboration with Red Ridge to bring the beauty of the Diamantina for you to wear.

Using vivid colours that recall the red of the earth, the yellow of the spinifex and the green of the river in flood, experience the launch of Red Ridge: The Label with their aptly named ‘Diamantina Collection‘. Shining a spotlight on Central-Western Queensland and the incredible culture and expression of the local Aboriginal community, RASN and Red Ridge are so very proud to present this fashion line that highlights artwork from Wangkanguru and Yarluyandi women Aulpunda ‘Jean’ Barr-Crombie and Anpanuwa ‘Joyce’ Crombie from Birdsville.

Bringing the culture of their country alive in their art, from the river to the desert, the collection as described by Joyce, is an ‘opportunity for people to see where we come from’.

Check out the fashion line before its sold out!

CENTRAL QUEENSLAND
Central Queensland University
Centre Stage in Central Queensland

Central Queensland’s artists have risen to the challenge of working in isolation and have found value in their arts practices by their involvement in CQ RASN's 'Tough and Tender Beauty Artist "at home"' residency program.

Created in response to the impact of natural disasters and the COVID-19 global pandemic, 'Tough and Tender' is the first phase of the signature project for CQ RASN for 2020-21 and will profile the importance of the arts for creative response, resilience, recovery, memorialising and celebration. Over 30 regional artists from areas including Rockhampton, Capricorn Coast, Mackay, Gympie, the Banana shire region, and Kingaroy came together – virtually – to share their collective visions through an online program and in turn create new memorable works of art – for themselves and, in some cases, their respective communities.

Of the project, CQ RASN Regional Arts Officer Julie Barratt said “the opportunity for artists living on remote properties to develop strong networks with other artists in similar situations and through the weekly zoom meetings to build a rapport which will last far beyond the one month program.”

“Many participants spoke about the residency giving 'value' to their arts practice and also how important it was to have a chunk of time to devote to their practice and the opportunity to experiment and to think more about the 'process' rather than the 'outcome'."

Julie’s colleague in Mackay, CQRASN Regional Arts Project Officer Wanda Bennett agreed.

“In each round there were not only artists from different regions but also very diverse practices - visual artists (working in all disciplines), writers, sculptures, musicians, comedians, and dancers. This led to all participants developing a deeper understanding of how different creatives work and provided a perfect platform to develop future collaborations,” she said. “One of the surprising outcomes of this aspect of the residency, was how much the artists valued being able to share what they had been working on with the group and the opportunity to receive 'informal' supportive feedback and advice."

“Many of the program participants had very limited or no experience with online blogging, web management and online promotion, an extremely successful aspect of the At-Home AIR program has been the ability to upskill these artists in these areas and empower them to continue to use these online skills and tools to promote their practices."

Artist Shelley Engwirda said the positivity of the group had been inspirational.

“In particular our mentors Wanda and Julie, gave me the confidence to continue my arts practice at a time when we are all trying to navigate our 'new' future,” she said. “Since the residency, I have been inspired to exhibit in a local gallery and have applied to run workshops on the Keppel Coast in 2021."

Another participant, Nicole Jakins said the program enabled her to focus on creating ephemeral-based meditative works, and to think beyond the scope of her usual arts practice. Her time in the residency informed her sculptural work, currently on display at the Bundaberg Regional Gallery as part of the FOUND Studio Dog exhibition.

“The residency challenged the way I currently approach sculpting, opened up my mind to new ways of producing experimental forms, and cemented my long-term interests in nature and sustainability.”

Bundaberg musician and author Matthew Barker also enjoyed his residency.

“It was inspiring to talk to and watch other artists in the region embracing their creativity through these challenging times,” he said.

The program will culminate with a cross regional arts festival in June 2021.

The Showcase Continues

'…Must Go On' has been developed in consultation with the South East Queensland North Presenters Network, which includes performing venues, festivals and industry leaders in response to COVID.

This new initiative aims to support the growth and sustainability of the performing arts sector across the SEQN region. Through '…Must Go On', seven performance creators took part in an online incubation and mentorship program that was designed to collectively support their business and artistic skills, as well as their health and wellbeing.

Restricted venue operations due to COVID-19, has impacted on the support for the development of new performance work. '…Must Go On' was designed to provide the collegial environment necessary to create performance work whilst in isolation or socially distancing. Participants come from a diversity of performance practices such as comedy, drama, performance poetry and contemporary performance and are based across the SEQN region.

Liz Burcham led the program, meeting with artists weekly online to support and test ideas, celebrate outcomes as well as meet with relevant industry leaders to learn from their knowledge and experience and extend their networks. In addition to each artist having a mentor, they took part in weekly sessions with Dr Margi Brown Ash who specialises in working with artists to strengthen their capacity to sustain artistic practice, be their best self and achieve their potential.
ALEXANDRA ELLEN - Conversations with my Walker
Alexandra Ellen, is a Brisbane based emerging artist, actor, writer and visual artist, with strong connections to the Redlands.

Conversations with my Walker is a new, hilarious, warm-hearted and accessible two hander that explores living with disability through my relationship with my wheelie-walker, Betsy. This funny and light-hearted show means that it will also appeal to a general audience, including those with a disability.

"I am currently looking for funding for the next stage of development, working with other professionals, to continue writing the script."
ANNA LOREN - 22
22 is a semi-autobiographical work, inspired by my maternal grandmother who, like many unwed women of her time, was forced to give up her first child in secret.

An exploration of society’s shifting expectations on young women entering motherhood, 22 follows three women, from three generations of the same family, all at the age of 22, as they navigate what it means to be new mothers. The story evolves across three timeframes, the 1950s, 1970s and 1990s.

Across these time frames we see snapshots of the different choices available to women in QLD and, the shifting perceptions and expectations placed on them.
DAVID KNOBEL & ALEX MCKEAN – Going/Coming Home
Going/Coming Home is a new creative collaboration between Sunshine Coast based performance poet David Knobel and blues musician Alex McKean. Building on their previous collaboration 'Back to the Crossroads', this new work examines what it means to be a man and a father.

The work is both personal and universal, it is an examination of the performer's own childhood traumas and patterns placed on them by their fathers and grandfathers, about what it takes to become a better man, better father and better lover. It is a live theatre performance piece that combines spoken word and blues music that will work in theatres and non-traditional theatre spaces.

David and Alex are in the early stages of creative development and are looking for presenters in early to
mid 2021.
EMMA CHE RAETHKE – So Near / So Far
People worldwide were sold the world of exploration. International travellers in the month of June 2019 were over 3million. In June 2020 it was 64,000. So Near/So Far is a new interactive performance work that looks at our changing relationship to air travel.

This work is set in a waiting lounge for a flight that isn’t coming between QLD and The Netherlands – a live audience in both locations. Two performers share their friendship and why it was important to meet up again in person. They travel virtually and introduce the people they are meeting and share their city sites. It is for people who have travelled or those who want to travel.

"We are currently looking for an initial home base presenter in Queensland where we can enter into a creative development stage of the work at the conclusion of which we anticipate being ready for presentation."
JENNY WYNTER & ANGELINE WYNTER – The Wynter of our Disco Tent
'The Wynter of Our Disco Tent' is a new musical comedy collaboration between comedian Jenny Wynter and singer-songwriter Angeline Wynter. Sisters by birth, BFFs by choice, Jenny and Angeline are doing it for themselves in this energetic 80s inspired musical comedy duo. With songs inspired by real-life audience contributed diary entries, this is a hilarious musing on our younger selves' expectations of love and life and how we change over a life-time. We are about to launch our call for submissions on World Dear Diary Day (September 22nd) and will be working under the mentorship of internationally renowned comedian Cal Wilson to develop our first live show.

This is a multi-platform project including:

a) Podcast and Video Content: wherein we read audience-submitted teenaged diary/love letters which we use as inspiration to create the most teenaged-dreamy, passion-fuelled angsty form of all: pop music!
b) Live show: in which we share our own diary-fuelled creations, plus improvising pop songs from audience stories/suggestions. When touring, we would love to put an early call out for local submissions to incorporate into the existing show.

'The Wynter of Our Disco Tent' wants to take the audience on a truly unique nostalgic journey towards the joyful escapism we are all needing so desperately right now!
'…Must Go On' was delivered by Creative Arts Alliance as part of RASN, funded by Arts Queensland.

BEMAC Helping to Kick-stART Creative Projects in Ipswich and Logan

BEMAC is proud to be delivering support and funding for both Logan and Ipswich creatives. We've highlighted some of the new projects we're helping bring to life with the Queensland Government's new stART grants.
knOwn by Riss Melanie (Ipswich)
Passionate Ipswich based artist, Riss Melanie is on a personal and ancestral journey with her new project ‘knOwn’. With this project, Riss is hoping to better engage and participate in connecting with Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians. For Riss, it’s about knowing her own relationship to the lands on which she walks, and the ancestral path she took to get here.

“knOwn aims to encourage all Australians, but especially non-Indigenous Australians to ‘do their own work’ in unpacking and understanding the lands on whose they walk, and however they came to be here.”
Deb's Digital Den – Debbie Chilton (Ipswich)

Deb’s Digital Den is the brainchild of Ipswich based artist, Deb Chilton. It’s a new project which aims to develop facilitation and digital literacy skills for artists with disability, by creating a series of interactive and accessible workshops for paid opportunities into the future.
‘ArtABLE’ – Chloe Wigg (Logan)

Chloe Wigg is an artist, a mother, an optimist and someone with a physical disability. Her new project – artABLE, is empowering her to continue her creative pursuits in a safe environment, thanks to the stART grant. Very few grants allow for equipment purchase and so with these funds, Chloe is able to purchase desperately needed ergonomic equipment for her studio.

As part of this project, Chloe will be creating 3 x all-abilities watercolour tutorials. These tutorials will help those with physical limitations connect with art.

“This is so very dear to me. Art has become a huge part of my life, function and sense of self but I had to learn how to do it around my limitations.”  Says Chloe. With this in mind, Chloe will be releasing her tutorials for free, and create some beautiful art pieces along the way.

Up North Does Best

Next month will see NQ RASN rocking and rolling and making huge moves!

With September dedicated to re-organising a number of projects that were pivoted or postponed due to COVID-19, the first major event for the month is the Ravenswood Rocks community weekend which includes two big days of live music and projection art! Following this is the inaugural NQ Young Artist Camp in Charters Towers and the Lizard Tail Recovery Project, as well as the launch of the Foots Hill Blues and Roots Festival.

While traveling to cement contacts in their region, NQ RASN met with the new Burdekin Council at their chambers to discuss future collaboration opportunities. Joining these talks were the organisers of the North Australian Festival of Arts. Held at the Dalrymple Community Cultural Centre in Charters Towers, conversations like these blossomed into a wonderful morning tea where artists and key council staff were able to meet and greet with North Queensland's Regional Art Officer for further discourse.

These face to face gatherings are vital to establishing strong connections and networks throughout the region; this is what NQ RASN does best.

Colours of Success

Available now as a case study on Arts Queensland webpage, read about how NQ RASN's Colouring NQ provided a paid platform for the work of emerging artists whilst engaging children and the young-at-heart amidst the impact of COVID-19.

Townsville’s Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts developed Colouring NQ in early 2020 in response to the coronavirus restrictions around delivering physical arts programs. The downloadable digital colouring book engaged children aged 3-11yrs+ (and the young-at-heart) with a visual arts project that could be completed in their own homes.

Developed in partnership with NQ RASN, Umbrella commissioned 10 emerging North Queensland artists to create one artwork each about the region. NQ RASN supported the project with funds and by distributing the call-out for artists and the digital book itself.

The final product, Colouring NQ, features artwork by artists Jasper Reading, Benny Mac, Peter Minon, David Sewell, Katya Venter, Stephen Coutts, Jack Macale, Erin Ricardo, Zuni Drake and Karen Williams, with artwork in a range of styles covering a variety of themes from animals and events to superheroes.

Colouring NQ is available for free download on the Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts website.

Rock On!

Head out and stay the night in one of the historic hotels or bring your camping gear and sleep under the stars for Ravenswood Rocks, a live music event with prizes to be won, projection art and a rock hunt for the ages!

Big News

BIGSOUND 2020 is going virtual, global and free this year!

BIGSOUND will continue to deliver for artists and to the music industry as a whole, and this year aims to bring the community together at a time when we need it most.

And Action!

As Australia began to experience the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Indigenous visual arts industry was dramatically impacted, many art centres, galleries and studios closed or scaled back their activities. Festivals and industry events were cancelled or postponed, and additional shutdowns combined with the economic downturn led to a drop in the primary market for Indigenous artwork, leading to an immediate and significant loss of income that has been felt across the Indigenous visual arts sector.

In response, the Australian Government is developing an Indigenous Visual Arts Action Plan to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, and their cultural and economic interests. Feedback is currently being sourced from anyone involved with the Indigenous visual arts sector who would like to contribute to the development of the Action Plan.

This Action Plan comes at a time when the Industry is looking towards the future, and considering what action needs to be taken to assist the sector to rebuild following COVID-19. Submit your view today if you are someone involved with the Indigenous arts sector who wants to contribute; this might include artists, art centre directors, arts workers, art centre managers, art dealers, purchasers, collectors, industry bodies or peak bodies representing these groups.

Connecting Art with Language

Co-presented by Deb Netuschil from the Mackay Aboriginal Language Group and Artspace Mackay, this webinar explores two best practice case studies of educational community projects that connected art with the Mackay Region First Nations Yuwibara language. It provides educators and artsworkers with inspiration for developing creative programs and projects that integrate art and language.

The presenters highlight the practical, collaborative strategies they used to plan and develop their creative language projects, sharing their successes, challenges and ideas for further development. This webinar equips you with ways to begin the conversation in your own community, and tools to develop projects that have long-term, enduring outcomes.

This event is part of a Flying Arts Mackay Hotspot of public programs that celebrate the exhibition opening of Jabu Birriny (land + sea) at Artspace Mackay.

RESOURCES

Your Responses, Our Futures

Creating Our Future: Results of the National Arts Participation Survey is the fourth study in the landmark research series by the Australia Council for the Arts that explores Australians’ engagement with and attitudes towards the arts.

The National Arts Participation Survey asks how Australians are engaging with arts and creativity in our daily lives. How do Australians feel about arts and creativity? How is our arts engagement changing? Do we recognise the impacts of arts and creativity in our lives and communities? How do Australians feel about public funding for the arts?

The report provides vital new evidence about the essential role arts and creativity play in Australian communities, showing the arts are a public good infused and embedded in the fabric of our daily lives.
