Welcome to the Streatham & Marlborough Sweep (SMS), a regular update of club news

Pavilion Update

We're up to 174 supportive comments now and still outnumber the objectors by ten to one! Thank you once again for your efforts!

As an update, the main issue we are discussing with the planners is the venture with the nursery. Our ground is on Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) - protected green space. The policy argues that the nursery, as a commercial operation, needs to be secondary to the sporting provision and they have concerns on the number of children it caters for. Raising funds in the current climate is extremely tough so partnering with a commercial enterprise is essential to plug the shortfall. In fact, the ECB, Surrey and the Mayor all see this type of arrangement as a blueprint to receive investment into clubs such as ours. Striking the right balance between commercial and sporting is key. For now, we remain in discussions with our nursery partner and the planners on how best to resolve this issue.

Women punching in the club stats!

Following the last round of games, there are players from the Women's team featuring in the top ten statistics for all three disciplines across the club. This is quite the achievement given the longest format played is 30 overs and there is often a retirement in place. Excellent work from this talented group!

Izzy stars falling just short of a maiden century (jug avoidance!)

Following on the theme of the Women's team performances, Izzy M-C, hit 95 for the Women's 1s in their victory over Town Malling, not bad for a fourteen year old! Izzy was supported by Tharby (26) and Perkins (18) as the W1s set 188-8 in their 30. Dag again led the way with the ball taking three early wickets to stall the reply, Town Malling eventually falling 37 runs short.

Another week and another set of victories for our 2s, 4s and 6s on Saturday. Some stellar performances too. The 2s built a strong total with Gray (75*) and Hobbis (69) sharing a 141 run partnership. The bowlers proved too strong for Merstham and reduced the opposition to 44-8 with Keenan taking a hat-trick. The 2s secured a 101 run victory with Sharif taking 4-14. The 4s batters chipped in throughout with multiple starts but no one passing 40 to post 207-8. Merstham again couldn't handle the consistency of the bowlers and fell 90 runs short. The 6s chased down 207 on a difficult Mayow Park surface with an over to spare, Hewitt he top scorer with 73 whilst Lord Barrington Wilks took 4-15 earlier in the day.

There were a number of performances to highlight in losses this week. Diangienda taking 6-23 for the 7s (he followed it yesterday with a further four wickets), Clarky (4-22) and McNeil Adams (54) for the 3s and Paul scoring 83 for the Sunday 1s. However, it is worth highlighting the performances of two seventeen year olds in the 1s. It was a pleasure to see Dodds and Khan bowling in tandem against Purley having both come through the juniors. It coincided with the best period of the game for the 1s as they restricted the scoring with accurate bowling and picked up a few wickets too. Expect to see these names feature more in the future!

The U10s also picked up another win in a tight game against Catford & Cyphers. Accurate bowling again the key.
