The Mid-Atlantic Messenger

August 27, 2020
Dear Friends,

In my role as the ACNA’s Dean of Provincial Affairs, I was directed by Archbishop Beach to bring together a diverse group to help our Church talk about matters of race. As I note in this release, “The polarization in our culture and political life, coupled with the sensitivity of matters of race, make this a very painful topic for many. Sadly, many do not feel it is wise for them to express their views except to someone they are confident agrees with them. As a result, it is clear that one of the primary tasks of this group is indeed to talk, and then, out of that experience, to speak to the Church at large in the hope of fostering greater openness and deeper healing throughout the Province.”

The Working Group on Race, Racism and Racial Reconciliation includes Albert Thompson of Christ the King, Alexandria, who teaches U.S. history at Howard University and who spoke to our 2017 Synod on the history of race and the church in the American Anglican tradition.

Would you please pray for this group and its important work for our Church?

It is my joy to announce to you that Bishop John Howe and his wife, the Rev. Deacon Karen Howe, have come into the Anglican Church in North America and into our Diocese. John was the rector of Truro Church in Fairfax from 1976 to 1989, when he was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Central Florida. After his “retirement” in 2012, John has served as pastor of the non-denominational Lake of the Woods Church, west of Fredericksburg, VA.

John has always faithfully taught the Scriptures and stood firm for biblical orthodoxy. As he explains in this release and in this interview, it was the trial of Episcopal Bishop Bill Love for refusing to permit same sex marriages in the Diocese of Albany that prompted his decision to leave The Episcopal Church.

The digital library of John’s many years of extraordinarily rich and insightful sermons and Bible teachings can be accessed at biblebanquet.com.

A warm welcome to Bishop John and Karen.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. John A. M. Guernsey
