Happy Today!
As we go through this year and learn how to do things in different ways, it's good to remember that we're all being "self-taught" on all of this. The procedures, the rules, how to create blended/online lessons, etc. There's not a book out there that details how to accomplish any of this. Really, everything that is out there is more than likely a suggestion. Lean on what you know that will work with your students and your teaching "style." Lean into the big ideas of education. Lean into what you want your students to accomplish by the time they leave your classroom. Lean into things that will help students be successful 5, 10, 20, 50 years down the road. I stumbled across the link below on being self-taught.
From "How to be a Self-taught Designer" by Tobias Van Schneider.
- "Self-taught is a result, not a goal. It's a verb, not an adjective."
- Learning Something New Guidelines
- It's about the organic process.
- Don't listen to other people telling you what's right or wrong.
- Surround yourself with people who motivate you and encourage you.
- Always help other people.
- Breaking the rules is the most important piece.
- "Fear kills curiosity, which is a key element here. So don't be afraid. Break the rules, do it wrong. What if you fail? Great, you're learning. What if you don’t like it? Then don’t do it, do something else. It’s that simple. The good thing about being self-taught is that you just don’t know how to do it, so you do it your way and just make it work."
My current LEAPS for this week. (Also, could be used as an exit ticket, or check-in with students)
L: Learn : something new or an idea
E: Energy : Something that's creating an energy and positive impact
A: Action: Something to do
P: Processing : a question to consider
S: Shout Out : something or someone that I want to celebrate of acknowledge
L: Learn : How to See
E: Energy : Sketching has been my go to outlet lately, which means I'm neglecting my banjo playing development
A: Action: I'm trying to start daily journaling again. It's dropped off once school was back in session.
P: Processing : How can I help you?
S: Shout Out : Deb and Amber rock. For real. I'm so appreciative of being able to work with them. They both bust their tails to keep things going around here. Also, shout out to the new teachers to the district that are not only figuring out how to teach during this time in history, but also managing new norms, rituals, and getting to know everyone without seeing their whole face or hearing people clearly.
May your day be great.
Stay Curious.
