Next month marks the 170th anniversary of St Andrew’s School. Opened on 23 September 1850, St Andrew’s was established by the Anglican Church to provide elementary education for “children of the industrial classes” and “within the principles of the teachings of the Church of England”. From our humble beginnings of one single schoolroom, 57 students and 1 staff member to a campus which spans both sides of Smith Street and has over 560 students and 150 staff, St Andrew’s has grown into a leading South Australian independent, co-educational specialist primary school.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions we may have been forced to postpone a number of our celebratory events of the occasion but this doesn’t mean we can’t all take a moment to reflect upon the School, it’s history and how it has helped shaped us over the years. Throughout our history, students have received an exceptional primary education. They have been equipped with the capabilities and qualities that take them into the greater community enabling them to act with integrity, to be curious, knowledgeable and enterprising.

An updated calendar of events for our 170th Anniversary can be found here. Please note that the 170th Anniversary Gala Ball has been rescheduled to 5 June 2021, and the Cathedral Service previously scheduled for this term has been postponed to 2021.
We will keep the community updated should the calendar change due to COVID-19 restrictions.

With the recommencement of all co-curricular activities this term, we are pleased to announce the start of our planned Football (Soccer) Academy lead by Marcos Flores, a well-known and successful professional player and coach. ELC turns 15!
The ELC celebrated its 15th birthday this term. To celebrate, the ELC kids sung happy birthday and had birthday cake. Alicia Flowers, the Director of ELC (2005 - 2011) and Cathie Egarr, Head of Early Years (2011 - now) also reflected back on the ELC journey from its beginnings to now.

Music events are back! Adhering to strict COVID-19 measures, we have re-started music events at St Andrew's.
At the end of Term 2, the Year 4s successfully held their Musial 'Aladdin' which was filmed so parents were able to watch and share with the rest of their family.
In Term 3, the Junior and Intermediate Bands, Orchestras and Ensembles held their Music Showcase where a small amount of parents and guests were allowed to attend.
With restrictions in place for the foreseeable future, we look forward to supporting students to be able to continue their performances and showcase their skills.

The Board is pleased to announce that the School has been successful in negotiating the purchase of 23 Church Terrace, Walkerville; the property immediately adjacent the lawn area next to our Gymnasium. This purchase was completed late last term.
The School Board deliberated for some time regarding the purchase of this property, considering the commitment of significant funds to a property, particularly amidst the financial uncertainly of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board was very mindful of this investment at a time where many in our community were facing or experiencing financial hardship.
However, we were reminded of our mandate to ensure the long-term prosperity of the School, including capitalising upon such rare and significant opportunities to safeguard and expand our school campus. In particular, 23 Church Terrace was identified over 15 years ago as the School’s number one priority for its next strategic property acquisition because it formed an irregular boundary, limiting opportunities in that area for development of level sports playing areas or the like.
As such, the School secured this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meaningfully and strategically add to our urban campus.
The School was able to responsibly fund the purchase thanks to its continued prudent financial management, as well as the generous contributions of the school community through our Building Fund.
Whilst not considered in the current Master Plan study (2014), the addition of 23 Church Terrace to our campus will allow the School to plan for the next generation; to reconsider the shape and layout of our campus, and to ensure this addition to our site adds maximum value in terms of space, safety, connectivity, function and amenity.

Seeking Board Members for St Andrew’s School Foundation
With the next stages of our Master Plan on the horizon, now is an exciting time to make a difference and become a member of the St Andrew’s School Foundation Board.
The Board’s role is to govern the Foundation which has the objective to raise funds to assist the educational, pastoral and capital development of the school.
Expressions of interest are welcomed from suitably experienced professionals with attributes that can add value to the Board. Expertise in fundraising, finance, project management, marketing, communications and previous board experience and qualifications will be very highly regarded.
Interested members of our community are invited to submit a CV and covering letter outlining how you would contribute as a Board member of the St Andrew’s School Foundation, by 5.00pm Friday 25 September 2020.

Let’s reboot home and classroom conversations to keep children safe in our increasingly digital world
COVID-19 has had a dramatic – and not always negative – impact on our lives, changing the way we go about our lives.
It will, hopefully, leave us better and more community-minded people.
It has certainly reinforced just how powerful digital technology can be and what a boon it has been to our lives. Technology is designed to be collaborative – and in our school community, it allowed us to continue to educate our students when the bricks and mortar classrooms were declared out of bounds.

COVID-19 reminds us of the strength of Community

They say that many of our greatest lessons are learnt in times of great adversity – and that has certainly been true for the St Andrew’s School community during the challenging days of COVID-19 restrictions and isolation.
We will probably learn more as these constraints on our lives are further eased and we, individually and as a community, return to an existence more closely resembling the normal of the days preceding the pandemic.

Scholarships at St Andrew's School

We are very excited to announce the addition of a new scholarship opportunity at St Andrew’s – the Stewart Family STEM Scholarship. Both Stewart children attended St Andrew’s School, with Ava (Alumni 2019) showing exceptional skills and unbridled passion for all aspects of STEM. With the knowledge that females are traditionally underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the Stewarts wanted to make a difference to a young girl’s life by offering her the opportunity to explore and enhance her interests in STEM subjects through attendance at St Andrew’s School.
The Stewart Family STEM Scholarship is available to girls wishing to study at St Andrew’s School in Years 4, 5 and 6, through the St Andrew’s School Foundation. Applications are open now until 5pm Friday 11 September and are open to both internal and external students. More information about how to apply can be found here.
Applications for the Academic, Music and Bright Futures Scholarships will open in September. Please check the Scholarships page on our website in early September for more information including how to apply. The Academic and Music Scholarships are available to both internal and external students whilst the Bright Futures Scholarship is only available to external students.

We are on the hunt for alumni from the following years to act as convenors to help organise and host reunions this year:
- 2000 - 20 year reunion
- 1990 - 30 year reunion
- 1980 - 40 year reunion
- 1970 - 50 year reunion
As a convenor, you represent your cohort as the key point of contact to assist with planning the event as well as locating and attracting as many Old Scholars from your alumni to attend as possible. Suzette Black, Community Liaison Officer, will provide all administration support in the organisation of the reunion including booking the venue and organising invitations.
