2020 Annual Walking Tour

70s turn 50 Virtual Tour

Vote for your favorite buildings!

After several months of adjustment, the Board of Docomomo Hawaii has begun to plan for the annual October Walking Tour.  Considering the present state of affairs, we anticipate this year’s tour will be a virtual one, rather than a physical gathering. The move to cyberspace results in one major benefit, we no longer are confined to a geographical proximity to organize the tour.

Prior to Covid-19’s altering the trajectory of 2020, Docomomo USA announced the theme of the year to be, “The 70s Turn 50”.  We thought this would be an ideal concept on which to build our virtual annual walking tour.

Here is a link to view a map, that we’ve compiled of buildings on Oahu built between 1970-72 (click on present to go through the list). We are looking to our members and followers to vote on their top five buildings from this list, to be included on our virtual tour in October. Here is a survey to cast your vote. Please cast your vote no later than Friday, September 4th, 2020.

Think Tech Hawaii

In the latest series from Human(e) Architecture on ThinkTech Hawaii, host and Docomomo board member Martin Despang does a deep dive on Edward Killingsworth. Despang is joined by Bishop Museum historian DeSoto Brown and special guest Larry Stricker. Special focus is given to the role of ventilation as it relates to the current pandemic.

For a companion episode, check out Brown’s brief history of how plagues shaped modern-day Hawaii, also on ThinkTech, where the historian walks through the role of architecture and urban development in protecting public health. ThinkTech’s mission is to be the leading digital media platform raising public awareness and promoting civic engagement in Hawaii.

1173 Waiholo Place

Not everyone’s eyes are on the 1970s. There are several gorgeous midcentury modern houses on the market right now, including this airy Kahala residence, designed by modern architect Herbert Beyer. Built in 1961 and located on Waiholo Place, the house looks out onto the Waialae Golf Club and features high ceilings, original detailing, and Mondrian-esque stonework in the living areas and on the lanai.

Beyer is less well known than many of his contemporaries, but he completed a number of projects in Hawaii throughout his career. His most well-known may be the Diamond Head Ambassador Apartments in Waikiki, whose butterfly roof, arched bridges, and elegant detailing reflect both Asian and island influences. One of Mr. Beyerʻs houses, at 3138 Noela Drive, has been added to the Hawaiʻi State Register of Historic Places.

Thanks Mike!

A huge mahalo to Docomomo board member Michael Chou, who in his role as a nurse case manager at Queens Medical Center has been on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. “At this crucial and unpredictable times, it has been quite a month after the reopening, cases soared, and our trauma hospital filled up again with COVID + patients,” Michael reports.

Michael was instrumental in planning and building support for the Docomomo National Symposium in 2019 and has been pivotal in helping the Hawaii chapter put this very newsletter together. (We miss you Mike!) Please join us in thanking Michael for his service to our community, and please, everyone, stay safe.
