GOOD WINE IS SELF-CARE
At present, time moves slow, cellars empty fast. Wonder why there aren't many bottles of '39-'45 vintages? Not because the Germans were occupying Châteaux all over France, but because the occupied Frenchies probably drank them all. Crass WWII comparisons aside, nobody is going to blame you if you drain your wine collection right now, we actively encourage it. Also we're here to help, over the next few weeks we'll be releasing some heavy hitters, typical collector bottles that shouldn't make it to Christmas. Drink em don't hold em! Read on for some inspiration...
MATABURRO MAKING WAVES

We're debuting a new producer this week, who we've heard much about even though this is only their second vintage. Laurent Roger and Melissa Ingrand are the folks and their small domaine is in Roussillon, one of our favourite little corners of France with it's Mediterranean winds, schist and craggy hills of wild herbal garrigue. The couple have a background which perhaps explains their ability to produce wines of style an substance so early in their career; formerly of legendary Paris natural wine bar La Verre Volé, they moved to Roussillon to train with the master, Alain Castex. Anyone who's tried Castex's wines knows the style, deep, light and incredibly fresh wines from sunny, stony terroir. Mataburro, like Castex, make a revelatory red with Merlot called Idoine, a real neck-snapper for those who think they know what a limp variety Merlot is... The other wine, Otium, is a typical regional blend: Granache Noir, Grenache Gris, Carignan and Macabeu. Short carbonic macerations and no additions of any kind, these little jewels are very limited so be quick. Big future here.

QUEEN OF THE SIERRA

Forlorn Hope is the project of Californian winemaker Matthew Rorick, where he makes wines from his family estate high in the Sierra Nevada. The estate is at 2000 feet on schist over limestone, making for very tense interesting wines. A typically Californian melange of varieties like Zinfandel, Trousseau, Mondeuse, Verdelho and Muscat add to the intrigue. It's very very rare that we see Californian wines made in this style her in Australia and the value is terrific. Both reds and whites are textural, acidic and aromatic, made without filtration or adjustments and only a tiny amount of so2 at bottling. Pure expressions of a far out place, super interesting and yum.

CÔT DAMN

The brothers Koerner are now legit respected Clare Valley establishment winemakers thanks to the Young Gun of Australian Wine award under their belts. Damon and Jono have become difficult to keep on the shelves as a result, and with good reason, their blend of expert technical winemaking and cool shit like ceramic eggs, large format oak and brown bottles sends folks wild. We've managed to hold down a few of their new release, a deep and brooding 2019 Malbec named for it's French title Côt. Unfortunately we do not stock their ubiquitous white caps but if you buy enough Cot we'll have a word to them.
DOMAINE DIDON, NEW REAL BURGUNDIES

As you know we're suckers for an upstart Burgundy producer doing things old school in the cellar without new oak or cultivated yeasts etc. Domaine Didon is one such producer from the Côte Chaloinasse, farming by hand with biodynamics and the knowledge gained from friends like Julien Altaber and Dominique Derain. Their little historic vineyard 'Vignes Blanches' is planted to Pinot Noir, Blanc, Chardonnay and Aligoté. We have some bottles of their very pure and delicious Bourgogne Rouge Pinot in the store and can highly recommend them for the delicate, mineral and perfumed notes that we love. Real value here, classy and beautiful wines from a very cool new producer.
