ALIA’s biggest ever LIS salary survey shows the importance of tertiary qualifications

ALIA | August 2020

Results from the largest salary survey ever undertaken by ALIA have indicated that tertiary qualifications lead to higher annual salaries in the sector. Teacher Librarians, with their dual qualifications, occupy some of the highest paid roles in the industry. From these results ALIA has created several resources: an ALIA LIS pay and employment snapshot, and five At a glance summaries with information on public, school, special, TAFE, and university libraries. In addition, two salary profiles for public libraries, and university and TAFE libraries, are available exclusively via the ALIA Member Centre.

Last chance to register for ALIA's thought provoking media literacy conference

Free digital health literacy training now available online

ALIA's Australian Public Library (APLA) is partnering with the Australian Digital Health Agency and the State Library of Queensland to deliver free online training to support library staff in responding to queries about government digital health programs. Public library staff, health library staff, as well as interested staff and volunteers from community groups and organisations can register online now. For more information, see the ALIA website.

Template to help public libraries demonstrate value to stakeholders

ALIA has created a template to support public libraries in reporting to their stakeholders on how their library has supported their community. This document can be edited to suit the library's specific circumstances, and tailored to their audiences.

Clementine Ford shares her love of librarians

From her Instagram account, writer Clementine Ford has dressed up in a personal tribute to librarians. 'I have such fond memories of going to the library as a kid and being taken care of by these brilliant, bookish babes who never made you feel weird for reading, and seemed genuinely excited that you wanted to escape into the pages of a story.'

Public libraries update

Public libraries have been praised as a 'great leveller' in an article published by SBS News, the article also includes the following, 'as a child, libraries were the ultimate means for social mobility, offering free access to books beyond the syllabus of low expectations. Music and visual art required a class passport I didn’t have, but all you needed to get into the library was your card, and your mind'. In NSW, discussion continues over the proposed Young High School Joint Use Library and Community Facility, Gunnedah Shire Library has restarted limited programs including Toddler Time and Brain Training, Grenfell Library continues to be popularHawkesbury Library Service has partnered with the State Library of NSW to provide its users with the new Indyreads platform, Nambucca Heads Library has been temporarily moved into the town's Community and Arts Centre. Some good news from Canberra, as the upgrades to Woden Library are underway and a new mystery box service has been launched. Meanwhile in QLD, Bundaberg Library celebrated National Science Week by encouraging its users to learn about space, there are lease extension discussions about two libraries in Brisbane, also in the sunshine state Townsville City Council launched a street library project.  In Victoria, Brimbank City Council has adopted a new five-year library strategy,

National and state library news

The State Library of NSW has released its report on how NSW public libraries have operated during the pandemic, the library is also highlighting the works of children's author Pamela Allen in a new display. Catch up on the State Library Victoria's special interview series, where award-winning author Alexis Wright talks to some of Australia’s finest storytellers. Applications are now open for the State Library of WA's film-making project, WA Reflections – Our History Rediscovered and the library has a new fan who wrote to the library from Massachusetts in the US, you can read the letter on the library's Facebook page. Once again the National Library is seeking applicants for its fellowships, check out the website for more information.  

Online safety news and media literacy

News articles and social media posts have been dominated by COVID-19 conspiracy theories, Media International Australia has published a journal article on the topic. 

2020 Softlink school library survey

Arts and media updates

Since the start of the pandemic the Australia Council for the Arts has been tracking how it has affected those who work in the arts. You can read its July snapshot report and catch up on its webinars on the issue. You can also read the Council's latest report, Creating Our Future: Results of the National Arts Participation Survey, which explores Australians’ engagement with and attitudes towards the arts, and provides limited information about library visitations and reading habits. Canberrans have reportedly renewed their love of reading over the course of the pandemic. Mid-career First Nations writers and storytellers can now apply for a new fellowship worth $10,000 launched by Magabala Books, in other publication news Hachette Australia has launched its new paid summer internship program. In book awards news, the shortlists for the Readings 2020 New Australian Fiction Prize, the State Library of NSW's National Biography Award, the winners of the Matilda Children’s Literature Prize and the Australian Book Designers Association's 2020 Australian Book Design Awards were all announced. The online ceremony for the Educational Publishing Awards Australia will run from 4:00pm on 3 September 2020. 

 INTERNATIONAL

Library news from the US

Over a number of years valuable collection items were stolen from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh rare book room. The final competing proposals for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library have been revealed. There are a number of free resources you can access on the Library of Congress website, and an article from The Scholarly Kitchen argues the importance of investing in libraries despite a shortage of resources. 

International library news

UNESCO is seeking empowering stories from persons with disabilities as part of its Story 4 Development project; you can read submitted stories on the website and/or submit your own. In New Zealand, children seem to be losing interest in reading, what can be done to encourage them to read again? On the same note, the New Zealand's Office of the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor has released the report The literacy landscape in Aotearoa New Zealand. In lighter news, Wellington City Libraries has waived overdue fees for a book returned 118 years late. The latest exhibit at the British Library features a range of Hebrew works, read about the Bombay Natural History Society collection in India, and Book Riot has published an article featuring beautiful monastic libraries from around the world.

Libraries across the nation are hosting virtual storytimes, and the State Library Victoria is no exception. The library has partnered with Victoria Together to present a series of storytimes featuring Victorian authors. The next storytime is on 2 September 2020. 

Indigenous Literacy Day

 Indigenous Literacy Foundation | 2 September 2020

This year, Indigenous Literacy Day will take place online, with events streamed on the Indigenous Literacy Foundation's YouTube channel. The Premiere will be broadcast live at 12:30pm, featuring ILF Ambassadors Anita Heiss, Andy Griffiths and Jessica Mauboy, to name a few. At 2:00pm, watch a special 30-minute celebration of Indigenous language, and literacy for preschool to primary students.

A conversation about diversity in children’s books

With the support of a grant from the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, Better Reading produced six podcast episodes, where guests were able to share their thoughts on the importance of diversity in children’s books. Topics covered include the representation of Indigenous stories, the voice of Muslim authors, and the representation of disability, people of colour, and LGBTQIA+ characters in children’s books.
