A note from Damien

Kia ora Koutou, how good was it to hear that we were not heading into Level 3 last week!!

As a school our team have been working really hard to not only ensure we are able to continue the high quality education we pride ourselves on but also to meet the expectations of Learning at Level 2. We are well prepared for Learning at Level 3 too should this be necessary in the coming weeks.

Our primary means of communication with you (other than The Pipeline) is through the HERO App so please make sure you have downloaded it and signed in so you can get our updates. It's also quite handy to keep an eye on your child(ren)'s learning too.

Another useful App is the Covid Tracer App, you can now use this to sign in at our school gates if you need to enter our school grounds. We will still have sign in sheets next to this and still encourage you to drop off at our gates to one of our staff members who will be there to welcome you all each day.

I'd also like to thank our whanau who are keeping their kids home if they are sick. We know this can be a difficult decision but we really appreciate our community supporting us to look after our school and our Mounties. If in doubt keep them home to help us stay safe and well.

Sadly we have had to make the decision to cancel our whole school hangi for 2020. As you will know, we made the decision to move our Hangi from Matariki to Māori Language Week to try to continue on with this special event but with the event of Level 2 and no certainty about alert levels we could not continue on with this for 2020. I would like to thank those from our community who had already offered support especially New World Mount Maunganui and Cols Butchery who were again right behind this special community event. Finally, thanks to Mark Fullerton and Brett Whyte who have been working behind the scenes to get our hangi happening. Watch this space, our hangi will be back!

We have had a few incidences lately of kids running around on our school roofs. This is so dangerous and we ask that you speak with your children (especially if they are older) about this and staying safe when using our school grounds.

Thanks for your support especially with the ever changing situation around alert levels.

The next Board meeting will be in the staffroom
tonight at 6pm

Keeping Ourselves Safe

At the end of this term all classes will be undertaking the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme. Keeping ourselves safe (KOS) is a personal safety programme that provides students with skills to cope with situations that might involve abuse. This programme, developed and supported by the NZ Police, helps students to learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others, and encourages students who have been, or are being abused, to seek help. The skills that students learn in KOS help them to identify, avoid and report physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, family violence and online abuse.

We have the police School Community officer, Sheryl Fitzgerald, in school during Week 9 and 10 to support teachers in delivering this programme. We hope to hold a parent information session on Tuesday 8th September at 2pm. Due to Level 2 Covid health and safety guidelines we do ask that if you will be attending to RSVP to barbarat@mtprimary.school.nz by Friday 28th August so that we can ensure social distancing for this meeting.

There are a range of resources to support families, further information and frequently asked questions on the police website. In addition if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to get in touch with Damien, Damian or Barbara to discuss these further.

Hi Everyone

School Banking - We have been advised by Credit Union that school banking has stopped and will restart in Term 4 because of COVID.   If you have placed a bankbook into the banking box in the foyer you are welcome to collect it - just ask at the office.  Otherwise all bankbooks can remain in there until next term when banking starts again.

School Photos - Friday 18th September.  A couple of weeks after photos have been taken you will be sent your child's photo key code which will enable you to view your child's photos and place orders online.  Please collect a sibling photo request from the office if you would like to have siblings photographed together.

Hello Sports Fans,

Thank you for your continued support as we work through our winter sports at Level 2. Our local clubs are doing a fantastic job ensuring our children will hopefully complete their seasons, and continue to build their sporting skills and teamwork.

Below are the Mount Swifts in action at Saturday morning netball, I’m sure they will be keen to get back to it at Level 1.

Look at our amazing Junior Learners!
The Bay mixing and wondering what will happen when you make Elephants' Toothpaste!
And have you ever wondered what might happen to a gummy bear if it's soaked in water, salt, vinegar or a sugar solution?
They 'grew and mooshed up', but not in the salt, it kept its shape, size and firmness!

Innovating Streets at the Mount
Working together to make Mount streets more people-friendly.
With your input, we want to trial ideas that make The Mount safer, accessible for more people, and attractive for the community and visitors. It’s all about taking up a great opportunity to test some quick, creative, low-cost and temporary street solutions.

Do you use the Mount streets? Council is asking for your thoughts

Tauranga City Council are asking for feedback on what our school community thinks about changes to Mount Streets. It is important they hear the perspectives of young people and local families to guide their planning. Please help to spread the word to encourage as much feedback as possible.

1.       How easy and safe do you feel moving around the Mount?
2.       Which routes should be included in a trial?
3.       What do you think should change and what should be kept?
4.       Any ideas you may have. For example, street art, better access on wheels and  changes to street layouts.

Complete the survey online here - www.tauranga.govt.nz/innovatingstreets
Please submit your response by Monday 7 September. If you need assistance completing the form, feel free to call Council on (07) 577 7000.

Register for the Community Design Group (open for application now)
Council is also setting up a Community Design Group to work on developing ideas that can be trialled. This group will consist of around 20 people from all corners of the community. If you would like to be part of this group, fill in an application form or call our contact centre on (07) 577 7000.
