Asia In Focus Issue 8 is out now!
Asia in Focus is a peer-reviewed OA journal published online twice a year by NIAS – Nordic Institute of Asian Studies. NIAS is a Nordic research and service institute focusing on Asia’s modern transformations. The focal point of the journal is the modern Asian societies viewed from the standpoints of social sciences and humanities. The geographical focus is the Asian countries from Central Asia to Oceania excluding Australia and New Zealand.
Asia in Focus was initiated by NIAS to provide Master and PhD students with a widely accessible and transnational forum to publish their findings. The journal accepts submissions (academic articles, academic essays, book reviews) to students from all European institutions of higher education.

CFP Asia and Africa in Transition Conference 2021
In light of the current situation and global coronavirus concern, the conference has been postponed from October 2020 to 28-30 June 2021.
In 2021, the annual ADI conference and the annual NNC conference will join forces with a number of globally oriented networks and centres at the University of Copenhagen.
Linkages between Asia and Africa have a transformative impact across the globe in areas ranging from economic development, health care, climate to politics and entertainment. This conference places Asia-Africa engagement as a focal point but also explores the diverse transitions that are occurring within each continent.
Keynote Speakers:
- Ching Kwan Lee, Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles
- Jonathan Rigg, Professor and Chair in Human Geography at the University of Bristol
- Reiner Klingholz, Former Director of Berlin Institute for Population and Development
We invite abstracts for paper presentations addressing one of the panels listed here.
Your submission should include:
- Name, affiliation, short bio
- Abstract including title (up to 250 words)
- Intended panel
We also invite full panel proposals on Asia – Africa related themes. Your submission should include:
- Name, affiliation and contact details of convener/contact person
- Title and description of panel (up to 250 words)
- Name and affiliation of 3-4 presenters in the panel, title of their presentations and abstracts (each up to 250 words)

Virtual Book Launch: South Asian Sovereignty - The Conundrum of Worldly Power
South Asia’s history and especially India’s twentieth-century emergence as the world’s largest democracy have made the subcontinent a critical arena for thinking about how transformations and continuities in conceptions of sovereignty provide a vital frame for tracking shifts in political order. This edited volume deals with themes such as sovereignty, kingship, ideas of popular sovereignty, democracy, rule of law, courts, and political authority in the context of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

CfA: Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Oslo
Applicants are invited for a 2 year position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Social Sciences and Global Health to be based at the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health, University of Oslo. The position is dedicated to a new research project entitled From Asia to Africa: Antibiotic Trajectories across the India Ocean The project follows the production, regulation and export of antibiotics from China and India, across the ocean, to its circulation and consumption in Tanzania.
The Postdoctoral fellow will be investigating the production and export of antibiotics and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in China and their subsequent export to India and Africa, analyzing policy, regulation and trade documents in Chinese language, and, if possible, conducting two shorter fieldworks in South China.
