A warm welcome to Multiple Disadvantage Matters, the newsletter from the Making Every Adult Matter (MEAM) coalition.

During the lockdown period, we've issued these newsletters on a weekly basis to keep you updated during the crisis response. We are now moving to a fortnightly schedule. We will continue to keep you up to date with the latest policy changes, as well as hearing about how you are responding locally, and learning more about how we can best support you.

MEAM Approach evaluation 

We have published the year 3 evaluation report of the MEAM Approach network. This year, the evaluation has focused on the role of partnerships in MEAM Approach areas. The year 3 final report, technical appendix and thematic partnerships report can be found on our website
Latest policy news - COVID-19

Public Health England replaced by National Institute for Health Protection

This week, Health Secretary, Matt Hancock MP, announced that Public Health England is to be replaced by the new National Institute for Health Protection (NIHP). The new agency is to be under the interim leadership of Baroness Dido Harding. More details on the responsibilities of the NIHP can be found here.

You Build Your Own Family: LGBT experiences of multiple disadvantage

The LGBT Foundation has published a new report into LGBT people's experiences of severe and multiple disadvantage. The report sets out six key recommendations for addressing multiple disadvantage in LGBT communities. 

Voices from Lockdown: A chance for change

Agenda, the alliance for women and girls at risk, have published a report highlighting that vital organisations supporting some of the most disadvantaged women and girls face a perfect storm as lockdown eases, leaving thousands at risk and without support. 

Investment in mental health recovery

The Centre for Mental Health and Local Government Association have published a joint report on the need for urgent investment to boost mental health recovery.

Rough Sleeping in England: Looking beyond 'Everyone In'

St Mungo's has published a policy briefing setting out the actions still needed to ensure everyone has somewhere safe to stay and the necessary support to rebuild their lives away from the street.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on probation 

The House of Commons Justice Select Committee has released a report on the impact of the pandemic on probation systems in England and Wales and launched an inquiry into ongoing reforms in the service. The inquiry seeks written submissions from stakeholders on the new model for the delivery of probation services. The deadline for submissions is 7th September. 

MPs warn of wave of homelessness when eviction ban ends

A group of 21 MPs have warned of a wave of homelessness when the current ban on evictions ends on 23rd August. In a letter to rough sleeping minister, Luke Hall MP, the group ask that government guarantees funding for local authorities to enable them to house anyone forced to sleep rough. 

£5 million for social prescribing to tackle the impact of Covid-19

The National Academy for Social Prescribing (NASP) has been awarded £5 million in funding to support people to stay connected and maintain their health and wellbeing following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Homeless Link updates

Homeless Link has launched their Excellence Awards 2020. The annual award scheme celebrates the best of the homelessness and supported housing sectors. This year they are recognising the contributions services have made during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mind has responded to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which have found that rates of depression have doubled during the coronavirus pandemic.
