Asian Studies Opportunities

19 August 2020

Welcome (back) for the Fall semester! Whether you are in Tuscaloosa or doing this semester remotely, we are glad to be here for another semester. We know that it has been a difficult year, and we hope that you are each staying healthy and doing your part to keep everyone safe.

If you have need assistance in some way or have questions about the Asian Studies minor and what you can do with the minor, contact the Director of Asian Studies at sramey@ua.edu

China and Africa

The connections between China and the continent of Africa are extensive and extend far back into the earliest history. The People's Republic of China is now the biggest trading partner with the nations across the African continent.

A new course (the first in a series) in the University Honors program will explore that relationship this Fall semester. Prof. Tara Mock will be teaching “Introduction to Africa-China Relations” (UH 229.014), and she will be following that course with additional courses investigating the dynamics of this ongoing and important relationship. Seats are open in UH 229.014, so consider adding that course to your schedule for this semester.

What Can I Do With an Asian Studies Minor?

You can do almost anything with a minor in Asian Studies. Minors develop skills in critical thinking, observation, visual and textual analysis, and communication, among others, by taking courses in multiple disciplines. Beyond the general skills, studying the cultures and histories associated with the countries of Asia helps students engage a part of the world that is growing in terms of population and economic and political influence as well as develop a complex understanding of cultures and societies globally. Talk to faculty in Asian Studies to hear more about the minor and the experiences of our graduates.
