High-performance, energy-efficient homes feature carefully designed strategies to maintain the integrity and functionality of the building envelope. These measures include continuous control layers to block or retard the movement of vapor, water, air, and heat. This presentation explores how these strategies compare and align with features designed to help a building survive and minimize the effects of natural disasters. Disaster-resistant construction techniques will be described. Specific emphasis will be given to flood-hardy homes, which are homes designed to survive and recover from flooding, which is the most common natural disaster in the United States.
Research and recommendations regarding construction best practices for other natural disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfires will also be provided. Case studies of several award-winning homes from DOE’s Zero Energy Ready Home program will also be presented with a focus on how these homes, located in different U.S. climate zones, were constructed to achieve both optimal energy efficiency and disaster resistance.

Changes in construction methods are improving the durability of our homes in the face of severe weather. Over 19,000 homeowners in 17 states have used the nationally recognized FORTIFIED Home resilient construction standard to strengthen their homes and reduce the cost of ownership. FORTIFIED Home is used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and, increasingly, by state and local entities, such as the Texas General Land Office (GLO), to reduce the risk of loss from storms. Learn how beyond-code construction can reduce the likelihood of damage to new and existing homes from both high winds and water intrusion, two leading causes of loss and disruption. San Antonio Water System's Renewable Biogas Plant

San Antonio Water System, in partnership with Ameresco Inc. is processing more than 1.5 million standard cubic feet of biogas a day and deliver a minimum of 900,000 cubic feet of natural gas each day to a nearby commercial pipeline to sell on the open market. This partnership enables the "recycled" biogas to be used productively instead of flaring directly into the atmosphere and creates a revenue source for SAWS. Our speaker this month will share details of the partnership and SAWS experience with recycled biogas.

Harker Heights Region

SPEER is getting back out in the field! We will be delivering a 2 hour on-site residential field training in Harker Heights on September 3 from 2-4 pm. During this time we'll meet inspectors from several jurisdictions around the area, share knowledge, and discuss residential construction issues in real time as we see them. The primary focus will be on energy code related items but we will also look at and discuss plumbing, electric, HVAC, grading & draining, flashing details, structural considerations and more... Jason is a recovering building official – he can’t help but look at and discuss everything! Due to the nature of field training and identifying a recently insulated house, the location is still unknown and we will likely not know the address until the day prior or perhaps the morning of.
