SPOTLIGHTS

IMPORTANT DATES

Continuing to Pursue Excellence
In this uncertain time, all of us in the Department of Public Administration understand the challenges you and yours are facing.  Whether it is about the pandemic, our inclusivity problems, or financial issues, this is tough on us all.  That is why we need to work together, collaborate together and support each other.  We remain committed to democratic values, inclusivity and promotion of ethical public service.  Together, we will make it through.  Together we can make our world a better place.

Fall Semester Classes Begin Monday August 24
Remember that online classes begin the first day of the term- regardless of when you have any zoom sessions.  Students will be added to Blackboard by Saturday August 22, so look at your class sites THIS WEEKEND to view your assignments.

Adding Classes
If they have room, you can add classes in the first week on your own (unless they have permissions).  After the first week no one will be added to a course if they did not attend the first week.  That means if  you are on the wait list, you need to petition the instructor to add you to Blackboard and to attend any zoom sessions.  If you are not the first or second on the wait list, do not expect to get a slot.

Dropping Classes
You can drop a class on your own before CENSUS, September 21. After that date you must have documented exceptional circumstances to get permission to drop.  If you feel you cannot handle a class talk to your instructor before that date to either fix the situation or drop.

MPA Professional Development Seminar PA 6985
If  you are an MPA student following the semester catalog you are required to take two semesters of PA 6985 the Professional Development Seminar.  This is a once a month- one hour -zero credit - pass fail - zoom with the chair seminar.  This seminar will provide orientation to the MPA, introduce faculty, engage career development issues and generally promote communication about the degree and public service. While only semester catalog students are required to take this (two semesters) all students are welcome to attend.  The seminar will be held monthly on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 pm on zoom beginning August 26. Our link will be   https://csusb.zoom.us/j/96444584850

New Format for the Comprehensive Exam
The MPA comprehensive exam has a new format (the same as last Spring). Rather than being given questions in advance, students will be provided general themes to study for each course, concentration or integrative learning objective.  Consult the Comprehensive Exam Page on the website for more information on the exam.  Dr. Roman will hold a Comprehensive Exam Review session Saturday October 17th.   Students who intend to take the exam this year should form study groups with each other.

Avoiding Disappointment!

Our own Dr. Tom McWeeney just published a new book on Strategic Planning---  Avoiding Disappointment : Leadership Driven Factors That Produce Useful Strategic Plans.   Congratulations, Dr. McWeeney!!

Make Sure you are Registered to Vote!
There is nothing more important in public administration than the structure of our government.  This defines public administration and all our work. As we move into the next election cycle, make it a personal commitment to educate yourselves on candidates and issues, not just at the national level, but at state and local.  This impacts all of us!  If you need to register to vote or check your status- do it HERE.
