From the Rector

Dear Friends,

I keep wanting to believe that we will get the announcement tomorrow that we can safely go back to the way things were. That isn't so, and we might not need to return to all of our ways. The beginning of Acts 8 tells of how the early church was scattered and then immediately declares that those who were scattered shared the Good News wherever they went.

As we are scattered, don't forget that we can share the Good News of God's presence with us. I know that many of you are doing that by keeping in touch and offering care. We can indeed share love and care even as we are scattered.

In this email, you will again see opportunities to connect in prayer, study, and generosity. I am particularly excited about our Neighbor Day preparations. Are you sharing some talent? I am practicing my drums.

As we are scattered, know that we are also joined together as the Body of Christ. Like those early believers, we can share the Good New wherever we may be.

Peace,
John Mark

Fourth Wednesdays, 4:00 p.m. Race Relations Discussion Series

Once again, the divisions and disparity along lines of race have been clearly revealed. There is a different quality to the response this time. At St. James, we have launched a discussion series about racism and how we can faithfully respond. We have three sessions scheduled on Zoom on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. through August.

On June 24, Fr. John Mark led a discussion of a video that can be found on YouTube. It is an interview with Ibram X. Kendi on How to Be an Antiracist. Click on the title and please watch the video before the discussion.

On July 22, Brian Austin led a conversation about the book Tears We Cannot Stop by Michael Eric Dyson.

On August 26, Margaret Bickley will lead us in a discussion of I’m Still Here by Austin Channing Brown.

You must register to be part of these Zoom meetings. Click here to register. This registration will get you signed up for all the meetings, even if you can’t make them all. You will receive a link and password once registered.

Education for Ministry (EfM) still has spots open for you to join others in study and reflection. This long-established course from the School of Theology at the University of the South offers a 4-year group study of scripture, Church history, theology, and mission. The St. James EFM group meets on Sunday evenings and is welcoming new students. Contact Fr. John Mark or Fr. RJ by August 28 for more information. Scholarships are available.

Our beautiful church gardens are faithfully maintained by the St. Francis Guild, a hearty band of folk who lovingly hoe, plant, pull weeds, and so much more. More hands are needed to join the fun. From an hour a week to as much time as you’d enjoy, the Guild welcomes you. Please contact lindadenton09@comcast.net or (865) 591-7880.

Our phone tree continues to keep us all in touch. You may have received a call from the person with your name. It’s a great way to visit and you may even make a new friend with your conversation!
