Upcoming Courses...

This fall, all the courses we offer will be online. For online learning, we use Moodle, which allows participants to log in on their own schedule to complete activities and browse course material. You’ll receive a username and password which will give you access to the site, and then each week we’ll release more material for you to complete. On average, students spend between 2 and 6 hours per week on the course.

We hope to be able to return to offering in-person workshops in the spring, in addition to continuing our online offerings.

Costs for all online courses: $100 (Members), $150 (Non-Members), $50 (Students)

Register online at: saskmuseums.org/programs

These course are offered as a part of MAS's Certificate Program in Community Museum Studies, a comprehensive, ten-course program, that provides entry-level training in museum management and operations. Participants will gain the skills they need in order to successfully operate a public community museum. Each course is offered in a scheduled rotation in locations across Saskatchewan on a two to three year cycle.

Participating in the certificate program will give you opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills to operate a successful public museum. You can network with colleagues from throughout the province, share your ideas and concerns with expert instructors and fellow museum practitioners, and learn to apply course material to your own museum.

You can download a PDF version of the Fall 2020 Education Calendar on our website.

Special Topic Workshops

Online Workshop: identifying objects of special significance in your collection

The objects in museum collections vary greatly, and it’s not always easy to tell which artifacts might be considered particularly interesting or valuable, and by whom. In this workshop, we’ll discuss what might make an artifact especially significant, from a variety of perspectives. We’ll look at different artifacts, and at techniques for locating and documenting the objects that may hold particular significance for researchers and members of various communities. Date to be determined. Please check our website at saskmuseums.org/programs for the most up to date program information.

Canadian Conservation Institute Workshop
Like most organizations, the Canadian Conservation Institute and the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CCI-CHIN) are affected by the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic. It is currently impossible for us to carry out their regional workshops. However, CCI-CHIN are offering online workshops as a substitute. We are in the process of determining how and when this will occur. Please watch for updates: saskmuseums.org/programs.

Governance Support Program
The Governance Support Program supports the boards of small Saskatchewan museums in understanding and developing sound, responsible governance practices by offering three-hour modules on a range of topics: the roles and responsibilities of board members, museum mission statements, basic strategic planning, introduction to human resources, and different governance models. We will not be offering governance sessions in person; however, we will be able to offer sessions online. If you are interested, please contact Dan at programs@saskmuseums.org for the details.

Tiny worlds spark imagination at Art Gallery of Regina
Each with neon red hair and a little white mask, 19 troll dolls stand together on a skateboard in the Art Gallery of Regina. These are the "COVID-19," says Robin Poitras, the creator of this piece and the curator of the newly installed exhibition that contains it. As artistic director of New Dance Horizons, Poitras had planned A Tiny World’s Fair months ago, before the pandemic. Initially, it was supposed to meld visual art with performance and movement. She adapted it early on to an online exhibition, and has adapted yet again to create this in-person visual art exhibition. Read more...

COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Heritage Organizations -
DEADLINE TO APPLY IS SEPTEMBER 1

The COVID-19 relief fund, available through the Museums Assistance Program, is intended to get money out the door to museums, archives, and other heritage organizations to provide support during these exceptional times. Depending on annual expenses, organizations can receive between $1,000 and $100,000 in emergency support. Please note: that the program was previously updated to accept applications from small museums with budgets between $2,000 and $10,000, also museums that are ineligible for the regular MAP funding are eligible for this emergency funding even if they have no regular paid staff or are only open seasonally.

The funding is available for any organization that has a heritage element to its mandate and cares for a heritage collection of any size that has some public access and had a 2019 operating budget of at least $2,000. Key information about eligibility and available funding is summarized in this infographic.

Please note that funds are limited and the department expects a high volume of applications. While the deadline is September 1, 2020, you are encouraged to apply at your earliest convenience.

Supplemental funding for Young Canada Works program
The Canadian Museums Association (CMA) is happy to confirm and grateful that, thanks to supplemental funding from the Government of Canada for the Young Canada Works program, they are now in a position to fund a greater number of jobs and internships, and to maximize funds available for museums and future museum professionals.

An additional $2.4 million will go toward Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations (short-term job experiences) and an additional $2.6 million will be devoted to Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage (internships for graduates). This is in addition to funding for the program previously announced in December.

Updates for the YCW-HO (short-term work experience) program

Employers with applications on our YCW-HO waitlist will be individually contacted regarding funding offers in the upcoming days and weeks.

Program requirements are now more flexible: museums may now be eligible to add additional positions, employ students into the fall and winter and revise a previously declined or cancelled position. Be sure to contact a YCW program officer for more details.

Updates for the YCW-BCH (internships for graduates) program

Employers with applications on our YCW-BCH waitlist will be individually contacted regarding funding offers in the upcoming days and weeks. Program requirements are now more flexible, and employers may expect to receive a greater YCW contribution per position than allowed by the previous program caps.

The YCW-BCH program stream will also be launching an additional call for program applications, beginning mid-August. To prepare, we recommend that any interested employers review the application guidelines. Internships funded under this intake supplement will need to be carried out between mid-November 2020 and March 31st, 2021. More information to come soon.

YCW is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy. The CMA works with the Department of Canadian Heritage to deliver the YCW program, which funds work experiences in museums and cultural heritage organizations. YCW is an important investment in the future of Canada’s museums and cultural sector, creating professional development opportunities for young Canadians who will become our future colleagues.

Young Canada Works is generously supported by the Department of Canadian Heritage.
