What's happening this week.
Law And Order Party
August 21 – August 30
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Joe Versus the Volcano
I'm back from summer vacation but things have been a bit hectic here, so this week's newsletter is abbreviated. Stay tuned, though, because the next one is going to be big (!). In the meantime, follow @lawandorderparty on Instagram or @lawandorderri on Twitter for slightly more regular updates.

Thanks to the reader who pointed me to the WBUR story about community theatre grifter Richard Bento. It's worth reading through to the end.

Providence Public Library is looking for a 2021 Creative Fellow, specifically an illustrator or other 2-D artist interested in the subject of Tomboys.

Composers: you have until September 14 to apply for this year's MacColl Johnson Fellowship, which offers $25,000 to Rhode Island residents. More here.

11 Things To Do Before
The End of the Month

At Specific Times

Books
Friday (tonight) – 7pm

Makenna Goodman
Twenty Stories

Author Makenna Goodman's debut novel The Shame is out now, and it's been described as a startlingly original work about "the emotional labor of self-sacrifice, a portrait of how the white middle class eats itself, especially by devouring women." She'll be reading from and discusses the book with author Sarah Elaine Smith. (Crowdcast; Free)

Film
Friday (tonight) – 9pm

St. Elmo's Fire
Misquamicut Drive-In
316 Atlantic Avenue, Westerly

When director Joel Schumacher died in June, obituaries were quick to point out that his roughly two dozen films were bigger hits with audiences than with critics. (Many remembrances also note that Schumacher slept with maybe 20,000 men during his lifetime.) St. Elmo's Fire was one of his earliest, featuring familiar faces like Emilio Estevez and Demi Moore as well as a young Andie MacDowell. Of all the hit teen movies of that era, this one surely has the catchiest theme song. ($15 per carload)

Music
Saturday 8/22 – 5:00pm

Stephen Porter: Ravel & Debussy
La Grua Center

Pianist Stephen Porter's virtual concert was recorded at Stonington's La Grua Center earlier this month, and the program features works by Ravel, Debussy, and Granados. (Youtube; $10)

Art
Sunday 8/23 – 12:00pm

Vermeer: His Life and Work
Providence Art Club

Though fewer than 40 works are attributed to his name, Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer remains a household name 345 years after he died. (The Girl with the Pearl Earring helps, probably.) Live from Amsterdam, art historian Kees Kaldenbach will discuss the artist's life and work. (Zoom; $20 for non-members)

Theatre
through Sunday

Corkscrew 4.0
Corkscrew Theatre Festival

A festival of new plays that were scheduled to debut this month, New York's Corkscrew Theatre Festival has leapt online with a goofy 1990s-looking website and some interactive versions of the plays that only take a few minutes to watch. (Corkscrew 4.0, free)

Outdoors
Tuesday 8/26 – 9am–3:30pm

Jonathan Appell
North Burial Ground

Jonathan Appell is on a mission to visit 48 cemeteries in 48 states in 48 days, teaching workshops on how to clean, repair, and reset gravestones and monuments. The workshop includes the cleaning of veterans memorials. (More info; 5 Branch Avenue, Providence; Free)

Friday 8/28

Violin Vigil for Elijah McClain
Dexter Park
