"Back to School: Being Brave and Taking Risks”

As students and teachers start their school year, we all anticipate the changing of seasons and the opportunity for something new. How can we live into these chances for growth and learning, and still stay connected and safe? This multigenerational-friendly service reflects on and asks questions about, our relationship with change, newness, courage, and community.

Homily by Jessica Halperin, guest speaker; music by Kris Rust, Vocal Music Director; welcome by Rev. Connie Grant.

Jessica Halperin is a UU minister-in-training and a staff attorney with New Mexico Legal Aid. A lifelong UU and former Unitarian Universalist Association staff person, she has also worked as a chaplain, community organizer, researcher, faith-based lobbyist, and anti-racism trainer in pursuit of her career in civil rights conflict transformation. She recently completed a concurrent graduate program at the City University of New York School of Law and Union Theological Seminary. Jessica grew up at the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh. Outside of work, Jessica maintains a Sabbath practice and enjoys cooking and eating locally.

COVID back to school help
Parents/Guardians-
Are you worried about your children starting school during these uncertain times? Do you need someone else to help to engage your child? Would you be interested in having an adult church member paired with your child for tutoring, storytelling, or even as a pen pal to practice writing?

Adults Volunteers-
Are you interested in helping a child at our church by tutoring, telling a story, or being a pen pal?

If you could use such help for your child or would be interested in volunteering to be paired with a child, please contact Stephanie Pawlowski at
sbpawlowski@gmail.com. Stephanie will collect names and send out a survey to determine the specific needs of the families and the availability and preferences of the volunteers. Because everyone has different needs, this relationship could be in person or online. Providing your name does NOT guarantee a match. It all depends on the number of people that would like to get involved and their specific needs and availability. Let’s help each other!

 Covenant group Opportunities
Consider joining or creating a virtual covenant group.
If you are interested in joining or creating  a new covenant group, you can complete a

If your group would like to set up meetings using the church account please contact Rev. Connie Grant at Constance.L.Grant@gmail.com.

Speak up when you witness injustice or hear a friend or family member continue to deny the flaws of systemic racial inequality.

Through white privilege, you have an audience that many black people will never have access to; you are a part of a community that has the option of ignoring racism while claiming "colorblindness." For those with the privilege of denying racial inequality, there is a reality they ignore, which includes never having to interact with the oppressed they claim has the same rights as they do. Be the voice that demands change, even when people of color are absent.

Learning and Action Opportunity:

Taking a Collective Breath: Deepening our alignment with the Movement for Black Lives

You are invited to participate in this five-session series built around the elements of the BREATHE Act. The webinars will explore the components of the BREATHE Act and utilize its structure as a way to focus our energies to effectively support ongoing racial justice work.

In collaboration with UUA's Side With Love, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is offering this new webinar series to assist in deepening our collective activism and participation in the Movement for Black Lives.

The BREATHE Act seeks to reform federal laws and eliminate funding for federal programs that criminalize Black, Muslim, and immigrant communities, reinvesting our resources in community solutions for education, health, and the environment.

Your UU-The-Vote-Team

As I count, Election Day, November 3, is 73 days from today. Your UU-The-Vote-Team is identifying ways that we in this congregation, during this pandemic, can support the right to vote of all people. Voting at this time in our country and supporting others to vote lets us act on our UU principles.

- The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large

- Justice, equity, and compassion in human relationships’.

There are essays to be written on both of those principles and our right to vote. Now though, your UU-The-Vote Team is asking you to consider working to Get Out The Vote with us. We are printing door hangers with information on the importance of voting and how to vote either by mail and in-person. We are identifying areas in the city and in surrounding communities where voter turnout traditionally has been low. We will be asking you to sign up to take a few blocks in a neighborhood and walk the neighborhood handing these tags on the doors. The UU-The-Vote Team will provide you information about your assigned neighborhood

We all know how critical this election is to our democracy, to have a government that is friendly toward our UU Principles. We can all work towards a free and fair election.

Watch this space for more information about how you can participate in the doorknob handing initiative. In the coming weeks, your UU-The-Vote team will also be providing information about how you can be part of other get-out-the-vote initiatives.

Helping Each Other

During these trying times, members of the church may occasionally need a helping hand. The Pastoral Care Team asks you to identify ways you may be able to assist. We expect you would be called only a few times during the year. Please contact a member of the team if you are able to help.

You’ll be asked to indicate which of these you may be able to help with from time to time:

□ Transportation

□ Providing a meal for an individual or family

□ Shopping

In the event of a need in the congregation, you may be contacted to see whether you are available to help at that time. Your help will be appreciated!
