Indigenous and Non-Governmental Organizations will draw public attention to the enormous threat of forest fires and deforestation for the existence of the Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation.

An international group made up of more than 20 organizations will present a report on the impact of forest fires and deforestation in the territories where presence of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation has been reported in the Brazilian Amazon and the Gran Chaco region of Bolivia and Paraguay.
The International Working Group on Indigenous Peoples Living in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact in the Amazon and the Gran Chaco (PIACI WG) will present the Trinational Report: Fires and Deforestation in Territories with Records of Indigenous Peoples Living in Voluntary Isolation in Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay.

This report seeks to draw international attention to the terrible impact of forest fires and deforestation on the lives of Isolated Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon and Gran Chaco, who are seriously threatened by the alarming increase in the rate of deforestation and forest fires. Through the use of maps, geo-referenced information and direct testimonies, this report reconstructs the serious events that took place during 2019.
The report contains concrete recommendations for the States of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, multilateral organizations and the civil society in the countries where Isolated Indigenous Peoples live, with the aim of implementing protection measures for their rights and territories.
Forest fires and deforestation are devastating the territories inhabited by PIACI, causing serious alterations in their way of life. In some cases, peoples are being pushed to move to places inhabited by other groups, with serious consequences for their safety, health and survival. Due to the differences in their immune system, one of the most important effects is the high probability of transmitting diseases, including COVID-19.

These are not the only threats faced by the isolated groups, which coexist with the expansion of the agricultural frontier, the advance in mining and other extractive projects (legal or illegal), as well as with other human settlements.
