Youth Ministry

Light to the World Luminary Event
Sunday, August 23 from 8-9pm

On Sunday, come view the many luminaries made by the children and families of First (Scots) as a part of this year’s Vacation Bible School program.  Enjoy the luminaries from the comfort of your car or park and experience them on foot, starting at the front gates to the church (53 Meeting Street).  Printed copies of the Light to the World liturgy will be available at the event or take part in this liturgy and connect from afar as you spread God’s love and light wherever you find yourself.  Pictures and videos of the luminaries will be shared following the lighting.  Please contact Suzy Edwards for more information.

Who's Ready for Youth Group?

Last Sunday a group of eighteen youth and adults met via Zoom to plan youth group for September and October.  On Monday our Christian Education Committee celebrated and approved their recommendations which include both virtual and in person opportunities including a tailgate dinner, virtual game night, kickball game, congregational dinner over Zoom, and more!  While the details of the schedule are being finalized, please go ahead and add our Sunday, September 13 (5-6pm) Drive Thru Youth Group Kickoff Event to your calendar.  Also approved were the Guidelines for Resuming In Person Youth Group Activities, which are designed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 within our church community.  We look forward to seeing you virtually and/or in person!

The best local Christian leadership training event will be virtual and FREE this year.  On Saturday, August 29, STEPS will consist of two workshop sessions with three options each. Read about the workshops HERE.  There are two workshops that may be of most interest to families with youth and youth advisors:
  • Teaching Children Faith at Home: Nurturing Love of God and Neighbor Beyond the Sunday School Walls with Rebecca (Becky) Davis (9-9:45am)
  • Big Ideas in Youth Ministry with Michelle Thomas Bush (10-10:45am)
In order to participate, you must pre-register on the presbytery website by Friday, August 21. Zoom links to the workshops for which you registered will be sent to you Monday, August 24.  If you do not receive your link by Tuesday, August 25, contact Dorothy Blackwelder or Pie Mikell immediately.

All eighth graders (and any older youth who have not joined the church) are invited to be a part of the 2021 First (Scots) Confirmation Class.  Confirmation is an eight month process that teaches youth the essentials of the Christian faith and prepares them to publicly profess faith in Jesus Christ and become adult members of the church.  There will be a virtual parent and student confirmation meeting on Sunday, September 13 (time to be announced once our worship service schedule is finalized).  Confirmation class will then meet each Sunday morning (time TBA) from September 20 through May 2, when the class will have the opportunity to be welcomed as adult members.  Our Sunday morning classes will begin with a virtual format.  Please email Terri Reno  by Sunday, August 23, if you are interested in participating.
