Have you been considering changing your arm action and making it shorter so it's "more efficient" or so you can get inside 90 degrees at foot strike?

Would you change your mind if you knew that getting shorter with your arm could actually make you worse?

Going into 2020, Robbie Ray knew he had to make some changes if he wanted to solve his notorious command issues and start filling up the strike zone more consistently. As a result, he made a conscious decision to shorten up his arm action after seeing some other players in the league have success doing so.

The result? He's walking 8.2 batters per nine and throwing strikes just 52.7% of the time - both career-lows by a wide margin.😳

So what exactly happened between last year and this year? Why has Robbie Ray's command gone down the tubes despite his attempt to simplify his arm action and get into better positions more consistently?

Turns out, his arm might not have been the problem in the first place. Now, it's become a problem - and we decided to dive into it.

Below is an excerpt from a blog post our intern Andrew put together on Ray's issues (still) filling up the zone: 👇
