Welcome

"And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, Who has been given to us.."
~ Romans 5:5 ~

Hope is in fact God's gift of His Holy Spirit in our lives. Through my darkest days that Spirit got me through; and sometimes that Spirit came through someone else.  Hope is faith in action - we hope for things we do not yet have. We are confident, though, that God will lead us through dark times and lead us home to God.  Hope is putting our faith into practice - an action that will never disappoint us.

We all have received God's Spirit freely. We can keep It to ourselves for strength and we can share that Spirit with others to build that strength up.

Praying we use God's Spirit often!

God bless each of you today and always -

~ Pastor Denise

Come to the Table
September 13 - October 4
New Sermon Series

September 13
"Revelation @ the Table"
Luke 24:28-35

When Jesus breaks bread with the disciples, their eyes are opened, and they recognize him. Communion opens our eyes to see God and others more clearly. At the table, we come to know one another and God.

September 20
"Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner!"
Luke 14:12-14

Most would agree to share meals with individuals who are familiar to them or with those they know the best. Yet, Christ contends that the table is less about familiarity and more about hospitality and care.

September 27
"Enemies @ the Table"
Psalm 23

When you feel that people or situations are against you, God is still in control and can provide a blessing.

October 4
"Laughter @ the Table"
Genesis 18:1-15

God invites us to pay attention for God’s unexpected ways of working in our lives in moments of tears and moments of laughter.

You can view DeBows online worship at debows.online.church. The standard worship service time will remain the same: Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. You will have the ability to replay the worship service after the first 9:30 AM presentation.

You can also link to the next 9:30AM Sunday service and replay recent worship services from the church website.  From the main menu - Worship/Online Worship or click on the Online Worship feature box.

Outdoor Worship Service
Sunday Morning - 9 AM
DeBows is currently conducting outdoor worship services on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. At this time, we envision continuing outdoor worship services throughout the summer, weather permitting.  During this time, plans are being prepared for Phase 2 of the church reopening process; indoor gathering.

Here is some information about the outdoor worship services:

  • Worship will begin promptly at 9:00am and should last no more than 30 minutes. Please arrive a little early to get yourselves situated.
  • When outside your car, please maintain social distancing; at least 6 feet apart from anyone you are not living with. Knowing this is not always possible, wearing masks is recommended the entire time you are outside of your car.
  • The church building and bathrooms are closed, except for emergencies.
  • If you prefer to stay in your car, you may listen to the service on your car radio by tuning to 89.9 FM.
  • You may bring your own lawn chairs and an umbrella for shade.
  • We will not meet on days with inclement weather. If it is questionable, please check the church website (www.debowsumc.org). We will post any closings by 8am on Sunday. We will also send out an email blast to notify you of service cancellations.
  • Gloves are not required; please only touch your own stuff.
  • We recommend anyone with any health issues to continuing watching the online worship service.
  • If you have been traveling out of state, we ask that you follow NJ state guidelines.
  • We ask that you clean up your own personal space after worship.
  • Online worship services will continue to be offered in conjunction with the outdoor services.

We are thankful for your faithful support during these times of isolation and uncertainty. Your generous giving has been vital in maintaining our ability to cover expenses and continue our church ministries. You may continue your giving by sending your offering check directly to the church or by using the church online giving feature found in the footer of the church website. It is easy, secure, and appreciated. The Online Giving option is also available while you are watching the weekly online worship service. --- Thank You

In Our Prayers

--- Week of 8/30 ---

Eileen Schuck (Ervin friend) - for her bladder cancer.

--- Week of 8/23 ---

Ellen Davis (sister of Peggy Ervin's neighbor) - She has been fighting COVID-19 for weeks now and has been hospitalized for 2 of those weeks. Her oxygen levels drop so dangerously low when they try to extubate her that she cannot live without it. The next step is to intubate her through her trachea and then be able take her off of the deep sedation and hopefully make her somewhat comfortable. She is only 62, was healthy, and just retired. She cannot see any of her family members during this time, although the nurses do hold up the phone to her to hear their voices. Prayers for healing and for Ellen and her entire family.

Carla Perry (cousin of Jill Palmer) - she lost her house to the fire in California.  Please pray for the family and the recovering process.

--- Week of 8/16 ---

Guy Raymond's brother-in-law, who Guy loves like a brother. He just lost his daughter to a senseless murder. Not many details at this time, just that she was at a fast food restaurant in North Carolina. Please lift up Jim Baker, his wife Laura, and their younger daughter during this very difficult time.

First Responders & Healthcare Workers - Prayers and praises for all those that serve and work in close proximity to people who have or potentially have the coronavirus.

--- Week of 8/9 --

Lauren Rikard (Daughter of Guy & Christine) - she had surgery on August 12 to remove a tumor, which was larger than first thought. She is in Alabama, so Guy & Christine were unable to be there. Please lift up Lauren and the family in prayer. UPDATE - surgery was successful and tumor was found to be benign.

--- Continued prayer for home-bound church members ---

Rudy Iannacone; Ann Giarratano; Paul Bartek; Donna Ridge

*** Please help us keep this prayer list up-to-date.  To add or remove names from this list, please contact Pastor Denise at pastor@debowsumc.org.  All prayer requests go directly to the pastor.

Time of Reflection
“Be still and know that I am God”
~ Psalm 46:10 ~

On the church website, there is a page called "Time of Reflection". It can be found under the "Worship" menu. On this page are words of comfort and encouragement, including links to Pastor Denise's weekly devotions, as well as messages submitted by other members of our church family. If you would like to submit something for this page, please send what you would like to share to Pastor Denise at pastor@debowsumc.org.

Also, please remember to continue to submit your prayer requests to Pastor Denise.  These requests will be shared with the church as instructed.

Our music program is led by our Minister of Music, Grayce Armstrong. Over the last 5 months she has been collaborating remotely with several of our musicians and singers to provide music for our online worship. Their creativity has been inspiring and much appreciated. "Thank You" to all who have contributed their musical talents during this time.

Recordings may be submitted for inclusion in online worship. You may contact Grayce by email at music@debowsumc.org if you are interested in recording for virtual choir and band.

*Note - Please monitor the church website and calendar for the most current information concerning music related activities.  More information about the DeBows music program can be viewed HERE.

2nd & 4th
Monday Each Month

The next Food Pantry distribution is
Monday, September 14
The DeBows Food Pantry is open on the 2nd & 4th Monday each month. Due to the COVID-19 situation, a new distribution process has been implemented so we can maintain this important ministry. Food will be distributed using an "Appointment Only" system.

People can call the church number at 732-928-4475 to make an appointment.

Please note: participants need to call the church by 5:00 PM on the Saturday prior to the scheduled food pantry day. This gives the Food Pantry volunteers time to prepare the food for distribution. "Thank You" for your cooperation.

Also, the Food Pantry ministry is going very well and there is now an opportunity to involve more volunteers. There is a discussion about forming two groups of volunteers; one to work in the morning when the food shipment comes in, and one in the evening when the people come to pick up the food. If you wish to be one of these volunteers, contact Deb Cregle and let her know if you would like to help in the AM or PM. Help is always welcomed.

Please contact Deb Cregle if you need further information.
Upcoming Fundraisers
DeBows is conducting a Rada Cutlery fundraiser during the month of September. All orders will be due by Sunday, September 27. Brochures are available from Anita, and can be picked up at the 9am Sunday morning outdoor worship service. The church will realize 40% of the sales. Contact Anita for more information at anitachichester@gmail.com.

DeBows will be placing a bulk Scrip gift card order on November 15. This will be the only gift card order before Christmas. A list of the available vendors will be in the October 28 newsletter. Contact Sue for more information at jerseysue@outlook.com.

NOTICE: After due consideration, it was decided not to host a flea market in October due to logistical issues.
In this strange, confusing, and unsettled world we are living in, we still need to find ways to reach out to people who need our help. We are blessed in so many ways and we are called to share our blessings with others.

Along with our ongoing Food Pantry ministry, the Outreach Committee has identified 3 additional mission activities for the remainder of 2020 and are asking for your support. These mission activities are described below.

September
UMCOR - Hygiene Kits

DeBows will be supporting UMCOR during the month of September with collections and building Hygiene Kits.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the not-for-profit humanitarian agency of The United Methodist Church.
Money collected underwrite UMCOR’s “costs of doing business.” This helps UMCOR keep its promise that every gift to a specific UMCOR project will go 100% toward that project, not for administrative costs.  UMCOR is historically one of the very first support organizations to arrive after a disaster occurs.

This has already been a challenging year concerning disasters: the wild fires in California have caused much property damage and displaced many people, and hurricane Laura devastated the Gulf Coast area just last month, and more hurricanes are forecasted to come.

If you wish to donate, please mark clearly on your check or envelope that it is for UMCOR. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated and will be sent to UMCOR along with the Hygiene Kits.

DeBows will also be collecting items to build Hygiene Kits. Our UMCOR Hygiene Kit outreach activity helps to meet the ever increasing demand for relief items. The Hygiene Kits we put together are forwarded to UMCOR for deployment to those most in need. This has been very successful and rewarding ministry in past years. You may drop-off complete Hygiene Kits (or separate items to build other kits) at the church at one of these times:

  1. Sunday, 9:00am during the outdoor worship service.
  2. Any Monday that the Food Pantry is open, 6-8:00 PM – Deb or someone from the Food Pantry will be happy to accept them.
  3. At church, Thursdays, 12 noon-1:00 PM, and Tom will be glad to meet you there, BUT call him first at 732-446-9189 and let him know you are coming.  He will not be there if no one calls him.
Click HERE to see more information about UMCOR and detailed information for what items are needed for the Hygiene Kits. Please contact Anita Chichester for more information at 848-373-9304. Thank you for your support.

October
Operation Christmas Child

In October we will be collecting shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. More information will be made available in the next newsletter.

November
Children's Home Society

In November we will be collecting gifts for The Children's Home Society. More information will be made available as we get closer. While Advent & Christmas will certainly be observed a little different this year, we can still share God's love with these children.
