Hi everyone

With Bucklands Beach postponed and no sailing to report on, our focus turns to the Nationals. We have some important nationals info regarding entries, entry fees etc that have been amended to work in with the Covid interruptions we are all currently facing. As well, we have a good summary of how to ensure you are keeping your measurement certificate current and finish with a great little article from the past that is well worth the read.

In this addition
  • Nationals Update
  • Measurement Summary
  • A blast from the past
  • For Sale etc
If you have any thing that you would like included in the newsletter such as for sale or an article from local events please let us know and we will do our best to get it included.

Sandspit Nationals: 11th - 13th September

General
To keep everyone informed and help plan regarding the E5.9 National Championship operating under Covid levels, following is the current thoughts and arrangements:
Under Covid Level 2, with no travel restrictions, the nationals will go ahead as planned at  Sandspit Yacht Club. Of course, this is dependent on the government’s announcement on the 26th Aug and its impact on Sandspit Yacht Club  but at this stage we are expecting a probable move to Level 2 that will allow the event to take place.
In the advent that there is lack of clarity re the ability to run the nationals under Covid restrictions, the association will make a final decision by the 4th September at the latest which is 1 week prior to the nationals.

Entry and Entry Fees
If you are planning or thinking of competing in the nationals, we encourage you to complete an entry form ASAP.
There will be no late entry fee
Entry fees need not be paid until 12pm Wednesday 9th of September, which is 1 day prior to the championships.
However, in fairness to the organisers, entry fees can not be accepted after the above cut off time.
In the advent that entry fees have been paid and the event does not take place, entry fees will be refunded or credited as requested.

Measurement
Make sure you have read the measurement outline (see later article in newsletter) provided by Dave and self check.
Make sure you have contacted Dave and arranged a time, probably on Thursday 10th, if you have measurement items to tick off.

E 5.9 Class Measuring.

Do you have a current Measurement Certificate for your E5.9?

It's a must for the Nationals, but, equally, it's important for all class racing,  as this is the basis of the class value as a one design competition platform.

Here are some pointers to check for yourself (The latest Class Rules are on the E59 website, top of the main page as "RULES"):
*  Has the boat changed hands?   Change of ownership invalidates the Measurement Certificate.  See Rule 3.  So if you have not had an new Certificate since ownership then you are not current.
*   Have you done ANY work on the boat?  Stripping fittings, changes on the deck, repairs and/or repaint,  it doesn't take a lot to alter the boat's weight.
*    When was the boat last weighed?    While we are not now in the practice of weighing at the Nationals, we are looking for the boats to be current with their weighing, which means it was last done in recent years and without any weight-altering work/modifications undertaken since.
*    Corrector weights fastened in place ?   See 6.3.1
*    Has your keel been weighed and it's length checked?   There are newer parts of Rule 7 that have worked to bring keels more uniform in weights and dimensions and provides fairing guidance and limitations.
*    New Spars ? Mast, boom, spin pole?   They all need to be measured, spreader lengths correct, etc.
*    Black Bands on your spars?    These can be prone to wearing off, but must be clearly visible.
*    New Sails?    Or Older Sails never measured?  We usually see some of this at the major events, but also remember that if you are getting new sails, and the loft concerned has a registered ISAF measurer, our class now accepts those certifications.
*    Rudder OK. ?   There is some tolerance in the construction of the rudder blade, but equally the profile, length, width etc are tightly controlled, and don't forget it must meet the minimum weight.
*    Safety.   Check the list, it must all be on board, and it's surprisingly easy to leave behind things like the anchor, life jackets, etc.     Something that is has not been updated on the rule but was agreed to be wise was to carry a First Aid Kit.
*    Location ?     As Class Measurer, for my sins, I can't be in all places and many parts of the rule need to be checked off in your area rather than expecting to do it at a Regatta.   However, we have Craig Satterthwaite in Auckland to assist and in other areas we/you can pre-arrange the  help of local yacht club officials, measurers from other classes, other E5.9 owners, etc, to stand in to photograph and/or verify measuring requirements.     Weighing must be on certified load cells/scales, and not just to the nearest 20 kgs !!.

There will be other items that I haven't thought of, but start with a read of the class rules and go over your boat, working through each and every measurement, that's what I have to do and it's a lot easier on every-one when every item ticks off.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions about your boat.
