We are delighted to welcome you, connect you, support your reunions near and far, and pray for you and your family. Whether you spend all of your school years or just one of them at Dalat International School, know that you are loved by many here!
What does school at Dalat look like now?

Education has really changed around the world in response to COVID-19, and Dalat is no different! While our students, teachers, and parents all feel blessed for the opportunity to be back in school face-to-face, we are challenged to stay safe while learning. With stringent guidelines set in place by the Ministry of Education in Malaysia, Dalat reopened on August 5 with 700 students, and some big differences!

Gone for now are all recesses, PE classes, sports and extracurricular activities. Instead, there is disinfecting several times daily, lots of handwashing, and masks worn throughout! Even so, there are lots of smiling faces under those masks of students who are happy to be back on campus with their friends and teachers. See for yourself here on YouTube:

Back to School: Q&A with Alumni Serving at Dalat

Did you know that several alumni serve at Dalat as staff? In this feature section, we’ll update you on these Penang-based alumni and what they’ve been up to.

Bethany Weidemann, Class of 2011

What are you currently doing (in your career and/or personal time)?
This year, I am teaching 3 Grade 12 English classes (Capstone, Journalism, and Brit Lit) and then filling the rest of my time with the position of high school coordinator. Basically, I help run all the not-classroom programs and scheduling that we do to make life interesting here in the high school! I’m also a sophomore class sponsor, and normally would be coaching varsity girls soccer right now, although sports are on hold at the moment due to COVID restrictions.

What is a great memory from your time at Dalat? OR Which staff member at Dalat impacted you the most and why?
It’s a real privilege to get to work with some of the same groups that I was a part of as a student at Dalat. Coaching the varsity girls soccer team the last three years has been such a joy in part because I have so much loyalty to the team since I was on it as a student myself. I love seeing my girls get to experience the family-like atmosphere that comes from working hard with and for each other. Being a part of this group was so formative for me as a student; I’m so grateful I get to be even a small part of these girls’ lives here on the other side of it! (Although we’re missing our first quarter season, we’re hoping to be able to play the second half of our season in February if restrictions here ease a bit!)

Flashback 2000

From the 2000 Reflector: “Will you go with me to the JSB?” says an expectant John Wu to Mary Carlton at halftime. Considered by many to be the biggest event of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet sparked creativity as guys thought up unique ways to ask for dates for the event.

Do you have a flashback photo you’d like to share? Send it our way and we’ll post it in the next newsletter.

In 3–4 sentences let us know how you are doing and if possible, send a current photo. Please include your full name (including your maiden name) and year of graduation. We will share your brief update on Dalat’s website.
