Governor Prioritizes COVID Education Relief

Governor Whitmer announced spending priorities for most of the remaining federal COVID relief funding to support Michigan's education system through the Governor’s Education Emergency Relief Fund. We applaud the use of this discretionary funding for proven supports for students including out-of-school time programs, Early On, and mental and behavioral health services, but the funding isn't near enough to meet student needs. The lack of supports for parents and other adult learners in the package neglects the reality that the system is asking more of parents to support their children's education than ever before, and the importance of high school completion and other skill-building efforts for those affected by the pandemic.

As federal decisions are still being debated and state legislators are continuing to struggle with upcoming state budget decisions, we need our leaders to finish the job and build on this framework to ensure access for every student in this pivotal year.

Contact Your State Legislator While
They're Home Now

We've all been working to keep the needs of children, youth, and families in our state at the forefront for decisionmakers at this unprecedented time.  Next week, your state legislators and members of Congress will not be in Lansing or DC, they will be home in your community listening to constituents and making plans for further federal relief efforts and quick state budget decisions to come.

Now is a great time to get in touch.  Reach out to your state rep and state senator's office for a conversation about issues that children, youth, and families are facing. You know what is going on in your community, and we can provide talking points, or join you if that would be helpful.  Keep reaching out to members of Congress to again let them know that their job is not finished on COVID relief.
